Why Copying Others Won’t Make You Who You Want to Be
Real change comes from adapting inspiration to your own life, not following someone else’s formula. Here’s how to build habits that truly fit you.
Most of us want to change, but we often go about it the wrong way. When we decide to improve—whether it’s our career, health, or confidence—we tend to look for someone who seems to have it all figured out. We see routines on YouTube, hacks on Instagram, or stories on podcasts, and we try to copy them exactly. The logic seems simple: if it worked for them, it should work for me.
But copying someone else’s formula rarely works. When we try to graft another person’s habits or routines directly onto our lives, it feels unnatural. Even if we stick with it for a few days, something is off. The authenticity isn’t there, and the people around us can sense it too.
This is when doubt sets in. You might think, “I did everything right. Why isn’t it working?” Confidence fades, and you start to question yourself. Is it me? Why can’t I make this work? The more you force someone else’s approach onto your life, the more you hesitate and second-guess yourself.
Why Copying Doesn’t Work
The problem isn’t effort or discipline—it’s that you’re trying to become someone else instead of a better version of yourself. When you copy someone’s life wholesale, you ignore your own experiences, obligations, and personality. You might not share their age, background, or lifestyle. What fits them may not fit you.
Podcasts and biographies can be more helpful because they encourage you to listen, reflect, and adapt. When you hear someone’s story, you can ask: How does this fit into my world? What can I take from this and make my own? This approach respects your individuality and circumstances.
Too often, though, we skip this step. We see a polished video or viral post and try to replicate it exactly. When it doesn’t work, we blame ourselves. Doubt grows, and our days start to reflect that uncertainty.
Adapt, Don’t Adopt
The answer isn’t to stop seeking inspiration, but to change how you use it. Instead of adopting someone else’s blueprint, adapt their lessons to your life. Ask yourself:
- What about their approach resonates with me?
- Which parts of their routine or mindset could realistically fit into my day?
- How can I tweak their strategies to suit my needs and constraints?
This mindset turns inspiration into real transformation. You’re not becoming a replica—you’re evolving into the person you want to be, on your own terms.
When you approach change this way, your progress feels authentic because it’s rooted in your reality. You’re not pretending to be someone else; you’re growing into a version of yourself that feels true.
