How Your Environment Shapes Discipline and Success

Raising Your Standards

Imagine being forced to eat at your favorite buffet every day—morning, noon, and night. At first, it sounds like a dream for any food lover. But now, imagine you must eat everything, and you only have twenty minutes. Suddenly, what once brought you joy becomes torture. The pleasure is gone, replaced by pressure and dread.

This is how discipline can turn against us when it’s rigid. Even the things we love—learning, working, creating—can become unbearable if forced into a strict mold. I’ve seen it in education: if you’re told what to learn, when to learn it, and how fast, even the most passionate student can lose their taste for knowledge. Discipline is essential, but without flexibility, it suffocates progress and joy.

A fulfilling life isn’t just about routines. It’s about blending discipline with adaptability. Discipline gives us structure and momentum; flexibility keeps our spirit alive. It’s what helps us keep going when motivation dips, when mornings feel heavy, and when that inner voice whispers that it’s not the right time.

Your Environment Sets the Tone

Discipline and flexibility are the foundation, but your environment is the frame that holds everything together. I’ve lived in several Australian cities, and the differences are striking. Melbourne, often ranked among the world’s most livable cities, surprised me with its graffiti, poverty, and vandalism. The atmosphere felt heavy, the sidewalks littered, and people less friendly compared to Sydney or Adelaide.

Sydney is clean and vibrant, with welcoming residents. Adelaide, though smaller, radiates calm and is also a wonderful place to live. Even Vancouver, despite its high cost of living and visible homelessness, pulses with entrepreneurial energy—cafés filled with people working late, driven by ambition. The environment in these cities either lifts you up or drags you down.

But it’s not just about the city. Your immediate surroundings—your home, your neighborhood, the people you see every day—matter just as much. If your environment is oppressive or discouraging, it’s like climbing stairs with weights on your ankles. You can be disciplined and flexible, but if everything around you pulls you down, progress becomes an uphill battle.

Choose Your Circle, Shape Your Path

Prioritizing your well-being starts with your environment. Your home matters. The people you spend time with matter even more. Sometimes, you can’t control who’s around you. But you can always choose what you let into your mind. If you can’t surround yourself with inspiring people in person, immerse yourself in uplifting podcasts, audiobooks, and conferences. Let motivating voices fill your daily life.

This is how you stay on the right path, step by step. Even when the world around you feels negative, you can create a bubble of positivity and ambition. I’ve found that when most of your environment is positive, everything changes. Life feels lighter, and your standards naturally rise.

You can complain about your circumstances, or you can take ownership. Stop being a passive participant in your own life. Become the actor, not the spectator. That means making tough choices—sometimes changing cities, sometimes changing friends, sometimes changing habits. It’s the only way to move forward and avoid getting stuck in mediocrity.

The Power of Being Pulled Up

It’s hard to swim against the current when your environment drags you down. There are exceptions—people who succeed despite the odds—but their journey is longer and harder than it needs to be. Some entrepreneurs achieve great things in challenging environments, but imagine how much further they could go in a place designed to propel them forward. When your environment is supportive, your progress accelerates. When it’s not, you spend precious energy just trying to stay afloat. Mental pollution—constant distractions, negativity, and obstacles—slows you down and clouds your focus.

Build Your Own Positive Feedback Loop

I’ve experienced this firsthand with my own projects. I’m developing an app called M Snap to help people track what they eat. The project thrives because I’m surrounded by people who care about healthy eating. Their passion fuels mine, and together we create a positive feedback loop. If I were in an environment where no one cared about nutrition, my motivation would fade.

Sometimes, seeing the negative consequences of bad habits around you can also be a trigger—a reminder of why your mission matters. But nothing beats being surrounded by people who share your values and push you to be better.

Take Action—Now

Ultimately, everything comes down to belief and perseverance. If you believe in yourself, you’ll find the strength to keep going, no matter the obstacles. Life is too short to let anything—or anyone—hold you back from reaching your next level. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. The best time to act is now.

You deserve a life that lifts you up, not one that drags you down. Take control. Choose your environment, your habits, your circle. Believe in yourself, and everything else will follow.
