How Tracking My Habits Changed the Way I Live
A personal journey from autopilot routines to mindful choices, revealing the power of daily progress and honest self-reflection.
There’s a moment when you realize you’re not enjoying what you’re doing—you’re just going through the motions, filling your days with tasks that don’t excite you. I found myself in that place more than once before I decided to make a change.
My turning point was simple: life is too short to spend on things that bore me. I wanted a life I could savor, not just endure. So I started paying close attention to how I spent my time and what truly brought me joy and growth.
Making the Invisible Visible: Tracking My Habits
To bring more transparency into my routines, I created an app called Mil Snap to track what I eat and drink. This isn’t about promoting the app, but about the mindset shift it enabled.
Every time I had a coffee, I snapped a photo and logged it. The app stored this information in the cloud, building a history of everything I consumed—healthy or not. Over time, this record became a mirror, reflecting habits I hadn’t fully acknowledged.
Looking back over five years, I was shocked to see how much unhealthy food I’d eaten—hundreds of kilos of fries, for example. Five years can feel both long and short, but when you see the numbers add up, it’s impossible to ignore. I realized I’d been eating far more processed and ultra-processed foods than I thought. The data didn’t lie; it forced me to confront the reality of my choices.
Tracking brought a new level of honesty to my life. It’s easy to forget what you ate last week, let alone last year. Our memories are selective, and our perceptions are often biased. But with a transparent record, I could see patterns clearly: what I needed to cut back on, and what I should eat more of. It was a wake-up call that gave me the power to make better decisions.
The Power of Daily Progress
The real transformation came from committing to something meaningful every day. For me, that meant working on my app. Even if it was just half an hour, I made sure to advance the project daily—adding a feature, fixing a bug, or brainstorming improvements.
This daily commitment became a source of pride and well-being. It wasn’t about the size of each step, but the consistency. Knowing I was building something that mattered to me, piece by piece, gave me a sense of purpose. It changed everything for my personal satisfaction and mental health.
I encourage you to find your own version of this. It doesn’t have to be an app or a grand project. What matters is choosing something that excites you, something that feels like a genuine investment in yourself. When you dedicate even a small amount of time each day to something meaningful, you create momentum. Over time, those small efforts add up to something much bigger—a life you’re proud to live.
Don’t Let Life Pass You By
Don’t let life slip through your fingers by filling it with things that drain you. You deserve a life that lifts you up, not one that leaves you feeling empty or bored. The days go by quickly, and before you know it, years have passed.
Take a close look at your habits. Bring some transparency into your routines, whether it’s tracking what you eat, how you spend your time, or what you’re working toward. Above all, commit to something that brings you joy and growth, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day.
I genuinely wish you the best on your journey. I know you have what it takes to go far. Life is too short to settle for less. Go for it—don’t hold back.
