How to Wake Up Energized Without Forcing Motivation

Have you ever woken up early, set your alarm for 5 or 6 AM, only to find yourself lying in bed for another half hour, maybe even an hour? You’re awake, but you’re not really up. There’s no real motivation pulling you out of bed, nothing that makes your heart race with excitement. Sure, you have work, but that’s later. You might even wonder, “What am I supposed to do with myself right now?” If you don’t have something that truly excites you, something that makes you feel alive, it’s easy to drift through the morning without energy.

This is exactly what I want to talk about today.

Positive energy doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. It’s often sparked by a passion project, something you love doing, something that makes you proud. It could be anything—a side business, a creative hobby, or even a simple daily ritual. The key is that it’s yours, and it lights you up inside. When you finish it, you can look at yourself and say, “Wow, I did that. I’m proud of myself.”

Let’s get practical. Take a piece of paper, a notebook, your phone, or your laptop, and write down what you want to achieve. What is your passion project? What’s your vision? Where do you want to go? Once you have a clear idea, ask yourself: What can I do every day, for just one hour, to move this project forward?

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Your passion project could be a business idea, a side project, or even something open source if you’re into tech. For me, I maintain several open source projects because I love coding. But your project could be baking strawberry shortcakes every day, filming your process, organizing meetups, or even writing a book about it. Maybe you’ll become the strawberry shortcake star! Or maybe you’re into horseback riding, and you want to share your tips through videos or teach others how to care for horses.

Whatever it is, before you start teaching others, make sure you’re at least better than average. If you want to show people how to bake the perfect cake, bake a lot of cakes first. Practice until you’re confident you can do it better than most people you know. Most folks might bake once or twice a year, but if you do it every day for two weeks, you’ll be ahead of the game. And you have to love it. That’s why I call it a passion project. If it doesn’t make you feel alive, what’s the point?

The real magic happens when you’re proud of what you’re doing. If you’re not, your energy will fade, and you’ll go back to dragging yourself out of bed. So, imagine a project you know you’ll still love in a year or two, maybe even three. Of course, your project can change and grow over time, but the core passion should stay the same.

The heart of your passion will remain, even as the details shift. Month after month, year after year, you’ll stretch and shape it, but the main theme will stick with you.

The only way to do great work is to love what you do.

— Steve Jobs

Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.
