In fact, it takes just a couple of minutes each morning. Let me share with you the one practice that has truly changed my life: the cold shower.

Why the Cold Shower?

Taking a cold shower might sound uncomfortable, but its benefits are remarkable. It helps you stay present, increases your dopamine levels, and strengthens your immune system. You’ll find yourself less likely to catch colds, and your risk of depression and cardiovascular issues can drop. Even those mornings when you wake up feeling tired or unmotivated become easier to handle. Instead of telling yourself, “Today is going to be a bad day,” you’ll feel more in control and ready to face whatever comes.

I’m not talking about severe depression here, but those moments when you feel a bit low or out of sorts. We all have days like that. The cold shower is a simple way to lift your mood and regain your motivation.

My Journey with Cold Showers

I started this habit years ago, and it has stuck with me ever since. My first experience was in Iceland, during a volunteer project on a self-sufficient farm. That was back in 2017, and I can hardly believe it’s been eight years since then. After Iceland, I moved to Canada and spent three months in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was there that I really committed to the cold shower routine.

Those months in Vancouver were unforgettable. I met incredible people, explored new places, and even attended a language school to meet more locals. I was traveling alone, running my business remotely, and had taken a six-month sabbatical from my job in Ireland. That break was exactly what I needed, and I’m grateful my company offered it after two years of working there.

During my time in Canada and Iceland, the cold shower became a daily ritual. It changed my perspective on risk, built my resilience, and improved my perseverance and endurance.
