How to Thrive as a Freelancer Without Years of Regret

For over a decade, I’ve been living the freelance and entrepreneurial life. My journey started in Manchester, then London, before moving to Ireland, New Zealand, and finally settling in Australia. Along the way, I’ve worn many hats: founder, open-source contributor, employee in fast-moving startups, and more. Each role taught me something new, but if I could go back, there are a few lessons I wish I’d learned much earlier.

The Power of Team Culture

Working in startups, especially in places where everyone is young and the energy is high, I noticed something important. Companies go out of their way to keep their best people. It’s not just about salary. It’s about creating an experience that makes people want to stay. We have regular team events, offsite retreats (sometimes even in another country), and simple things like cheese and wine evenings or group lunches. These moments build real connections.

Why do companies do this? Because it’s getting harder to keep talented people. If a company doesn’t have a strong culture, people leave. The same goes for freelancers and small businesses. If you work with others, or if you hire people, you need to give them a reason to stick around. It’s not just about money. It’s about the experience, the feeling of being valued, and the chance to learn from each other.

Surround Yourself with People Who Inspire You

One thing I’ve learned is that you never want to be the smartest person in the room. If you are, you stop growing. The best teams are made up of people with different skills who are open-minded and willing to share what they know. When you work with people who challenge you, you learn and improve much faster.

The Little Extras Matter

Let me give you a simple example. I recently visited a dermatologist in Australia. It cost $200, which is much more than the usual $60 or $70. But here’s the difference: the appointment lasted 40 minutes, not five. The doctor explained everything, took detailed photos, and gave me access to a portal where I can track changes in my skin over time. They use advanced tools and take the time to make sure nothing is missed.

Most places rush you in and out. Here, I felt cared for. I paid more, but I got real value. This is what sets a great service apart. People are willing to pay more if they know they’ll get something special—attention, care, and peace of mind.

Create Magical Moments for Your Clients

Whether you’re a freelancer, run a small agency, or work in a startup, think about how you can create those “wow” moments for your clients. What small touches can you add that make people remember you? Maybe it’s a personal follow-up, a thoughtful extra, or just being there when they need you. These moments make all the difference.

If you offer something unique, people will come back to you, even if you charge more. They know what to expect, they trust your values, and they feel confident in your work.

Go Beyond Expectations

I talk about this a lot in my self-help book, but it’s worth repeating: always look for ways to go beyond what’s expected. Surprise your clients, your team, or anyone you work with. Give them something memorable. That’s how you build loyalty and stand out.

If the journey is beautiful, we don’t ask where it leads. We just enjoy the path. — Anonymous
