After nearly a decade spent reading a staggering number of biographies—enough to make anyone’s head spin—I’ve noticed clear patterns among the world’s most talented and successful people. These aren’t just random traits, but real habits that keep showing up, no matter the person’s background or field. Let’s break down the seven habits that keep coming up, and see how you can use them in your own life.

1. Intellectual Curiosity

Talented people never think they know it all. They’re always hungry to learn something new. Instead of resting on their achievements, they see themselves as always having more to discover. Every day is a chance to ask: What can I learn today? What skill or knowledge should I invest in now? This mindset keeps them growing, no matter how much they’ve already accomplished.

2. Investing Money Wisely

This one might surprise you, depending on your generation. For many, especially younger folks, it’s clear: you have to keep investing your money. It’s not enough to earn a lot and then just stop. Talented people make their money work for them—through stocks, ETFs, real estate, cryptocurrency, or even art and gold. The key is to stay alert for new opportunities and never let your money sit idle. Even if you start small, the habit of investing is what matters.

3. Reading—A Lot

Reading is a habit that comes up again and again. Books calm the mind, open new worlds, and remind us how much we don’t know. The more you read, the more you realize there’s still so much to learn. This shift in mindset pushes you to act, to make new decisions, and to keep moving forward.

4. Taking Responsibility

Here’s a big one: talented people put the blame on themselves, not others. Instead of saying, “I’m poor because of my country,” they ask, “What can I do about it?” This habit of self-responsibility leads to real change. If you’re late to a meeting, don’t blame traffic—ask what you can do to be on time next time. Blaming others keeps you stuck; taking responsibility helps you grow.

5. Building a Strong Network

Networking isn’t just about collecting business cards. It’s about seeking out new opportunities and learning from others. The strongest connections are made in person, not just online. Go to events, coworking spaces, or even talk to colleagues who know more than you. If you’re always the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. Invest in relationships with people who are open and willing to help others—what’s often called the “pay it forward” mindset, especially common in places like Silicon Valley.

6. Accepting Chance and Moving On

Sometimes, things just don’t go your way. Maybe you miss out on a dream job or a big opportunity. Instead of getting stuck, talented people accept that sometimes chance has other plans. They move on and look for what’s next. This doesn’t mean ignoring real pain or loss, but when it comes to opportunities, sometimes missing out is actually for the best. The important thing is to keep moving forward.

7. Decisiveness and Learning from Mistakes

Talented people don’t get stuck in indecision. When faced with a choice, they make a decision and act. Inaction is like standing still—nothing changes. Even if it turns out to be the wrong choice, they learn from their mistakes and keep going. Every mistake is a stepping stone, not a dead end. The best lessons often come from personal experience, not just from what others tell us.

Enjoying the Journey

At the end of the day, life is a journey. If you’re always focused on the end goal, you’ll miss the best parts. Talented people know how to enjoy the present moment. Being happy and fulfilled is the real measure of success. After all, what’s the point of being a millionaire if you’re not happy?
