How to Take Charge of Life Before It’s Too Late

Most of us live as if our time is unlimited. We plan, we postpone, we put off what matters, thinking there will always be more days, more chances. But the truth is, life does end. One day, it will be over. When you really understand this, your decisions become wiser, and you start to enjoy the simple moments—the ones that bring real happiness and little worry.
Simple moments are often the best. Sitting by the bay on a quiet weekday afternoon, I notice how peaceful it is compared to the crowded weekends. People speak softly, respecting each other’s space. I appreciate this calm. But sometimes, we find ourselves in noisy, disrespectful environments that frustrate us. Life is too short to put up with that. If something doesn’t suit you, change your environment. Move, travel, or simply go somewhere else. There are so many places in the world, yet we often tell ourselves we can’t go, that it’s impossible. But is it really?
I love spending time at a local café called the Lookout. Sometimes, I just sit there, reflect, and watch life go by. These moments of stepping back help me process events, especially the tough ones. When something goes wrong, like when my server was recently hacked, it’s easy to get angry or blame others. But I’ve learned to ask myself: How could I have avoided this? Even if someone else wrote the code, I’m responsible for my server. Maybe I should have checked things more closely. Taking responsibility, even when it’s hard, helps me grow.
We waste so much time at jobs we don’t like, especially when we’re young and eager to learn. I remember my first job in Dublin. I loved it, stayed late just to chat with my colleagues. But looking back, I wonder if it was worth giving so much energy for a fixed salary and no real stake in the company. I wanted to prove myself, but in the end, I was just another employee. What do you really want in life? Most of us want to build something of our own, something that belongs to us. Working for a company is fine, but sacrificing your life for it? That’s another story.
Money comes and goes. Time doesn’t. Time is like a train that never stops. That’s why it’s so important to enjoy where you are, right now. We don’t know how long we have on this planet. I wrote this note early this morning, just after waking up, because it struck me how often we make poor choices, thinking life is endless. But if tomorrow was your last day, what would you regret? That’s what you need to figure out.

For me, I want to go to Antarctica. It’s the experiences we miss that we regret, not the things we didn’t buy. You won’t regret not having the latest iPhone, but you might regret not taking a trip or living an adventure. Experiences matter most. If you’re interested, you can always take matters into your own hands and design your ideal life.
The best time to act is now. Don’t put off what you can do today. Ask yourself: How can I avoid frustration? How can I stop doing things that don’t interest me? Focus on what brings you joy instead of depriving yourself. Too many people wait for retirement, only to get sick or worse before they can enjoy it. Take “mini-retirements” now. I once took a six-month unpaid break from work, traveled, volunteered in Iceland, and explored Canada’s beautiful landscapes. These memories last a lifetime.
Even during a simple lunch break, I try to work with a beautiful view. It makes all the difference. Every couple of hours, I pause and ask myself: Am I happy with how I spent this time? Did I do something just to please someone else? Don’t be a people-pleaser—someone who buys a fancy car just to impress others, even if they don’t care about cars. Spend your time and energy on what truly matters to you.
Your life is precious, and your time is limited. You have your own train to catch—the train of your life. Others may have different interests, and that’s okay. Know what matters to you, and make your decisions accordingly.
