We all think. That’s what makes us human. But the way we think, the way we interpret our thoughts, is unique to each of us. Still, some thoughts push us forward, closer to what we want, to a brighter and more satisfying life. Others drag us down, keeping us stuck in negativity and pessimism.

The real difference in life comes from the kind of thoughts we choose to nurture. When your mind is filled with uplifting, kind, and energizing thoughts, everything feels lighter. You feel good, you feel motivated, and you’re ready to take on the world. But when you let negative thoughts take over—when you ruminate, replaying old conversations or worrying about what someone meant—you waste precious mental space. That’s energy you could use to solve problems, create new projects, or simply enjoy the present.

Think about it: how many times have you found yourself lost in thought, replaying something that happened, instead of being present with the person in front of you? You’re not really there. You’re not living in the only moment that truly exists—now. Today is unique. This moment will never come again. Tomorrow, today will be gone forever.

That’s why training your mind is so important. Meditation is a great way to do this. It’s not about emptying your mind, but about focusing all your attention on one thing—your breath, the sound of the wind, or even the hum of an airplane. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to stay present and not get lost in endless loops of thought.

Changing your environment also helps. Sometimes, just going for a walk, seeing new things, breathing fresh air, can spark new ideas and lift your mood. I often walk near the bay where I live. The scenery, the smiling people, the dogs playing—it all helps me think better thoughts. Beautiful houses, palm trees, the simple joy of being outside—these things feed my mind and help me stay creative.

To live a life that’s not mediocre, you have to feed your mind with good things. Surround yourself with people and places that inspire you. Give yourself projects, both short and long term. When you wake up with something to look forward to, you’re more likely to feel alive and motivated. Without projects or goals, you drift, and that’s when life starts to feel empty.

It’s also important to challenge your own limits. Sometimes, the only thing holding you back is a belief you’ve created in your own mind. If you want something deeply, if you’re obsessed with making it happen, you’ll find a way. The only real limits are the ones you set for yourself.

So, if you want to stop living a mediocre life, start by changing your thoughts. Focus on what’s good, what’s possible, and what excites you. Give yourself permission to dream, to try, and to enjoy the journey.
