How to Stay Productive Anywhere Without Losing Focus as a Digital Nomad

Traveling and working at the same time is a whole different ball game. If you’re an entrepreneur, freelancer, or digital nomad, you know that every day brings a new environment—and that means your way of organizing yourself has to adapt constantly.

Take airports, for example. Right now, I’m writing this from an airport lounge. If you’re a freelancer or work independently, you have to find a spot that suits you, or you simply won’t get anything done. Sure, you can delegate or automate some tasks, but there are always things you have to do yourself. If you can’t get those done, your business will suffer, and over time, so will your income.

Some places just aren’t made for work. When you’re about to board a plane, you might get access to a VIP lounge if you’re lucky, but it’s not always quiet—even in business class. Most of us start out flying economy, waiting in noisy terminals. That’s when I use the time to listen to audiobooks or sort through my to-do lists. I like to clean up my task lists while waiting—reorganizing, ticking off what’s done, and planning what I’ll do on the plane or after I land. Sometimes, I upload photos or just brainstorm, using white noise and my noise-canceling headphones to create a little bubble for myself.

Recently, I was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after spending time in Bangkok, Thailand. Bangkok is loud—motorbikes everywhere, pollution, constant noise. I even wear a mask for the pollution. Coming from Australia, where everything is organized and quiet (even in Sydney), the chaos can be overwhelming. But I’ve learned to reset myself by managing my energy.

For me, that means using music, dancing in place to boost my dopamine, taking a cold shower, going for a jog, or hitting the gym. If I need to calm down, I’ll take a hot shower, get a massage (they’re really affordable in some countries), find a cozy spot, or meditate. Sometimes, I’ll go to a sauna or jacuzzi—anything that helps me relax or recharge, depending on what I need.

The key is to create the mood you need, even if you’re not feeling it at first. You can manufacture motivation by repeating certain rituals or doing a small task beforehand. If you need energy, go for a run or take a cold shower. If you need to relax and think, read, hit the sauna, or get a massage. These little routines help a lot, even when you’re on the move.

And here’s something important: No matter where you are, even if there’s no internet or the weather’s bad, try to see your environment as an opportunity. No internet? Time to read. Stuck in a noisy place? Maybe it’s a good moment to brainstorm or reorganize your notes. The unpredictability is part of the journey. The noise, the delays, the chaos—they’re all part of the nomad life.
