When Curiosity Becomes a Trap

PERSÉVÈRE et GAGNE : tes CLÉS pour GRAVIR LES ÉCHELONS

Why focus and discipline matter more than endless curiosity

A few years ago, I had a realization that changed the way I approach my goals. I want to share it with you because it cost me a lot of time, and I hope you can avoid the same mistake.

We live in a time where information is everywhere, and it’s tempting to want to do everything. For years, I wanted to create a video game using Unreal Engine 4 (now it’s version 5). I started, stopped, started again, but never finished. Each time, I lost not only time but also the knowledge I had gained—skills fade when you don’t use them. Looking back, maybe I should have either not started at all or pushed through to the end. Making a game takes a huge amount of time, and my half-hearted attempts only distracted me from things I was already good at.

I’ve always loved video games. As a kid, I devoured every issue of Nintendo and PlayStation magazines. I still have a whole stack of them. Even in the old Pixou magazine, I would go straight to the video game section. I loved Star Fox, Zelda, Mario, Call of Duty, Resistance—so it made sense that I wanted to make a game myself.

But here’s the thing: I didn’t get into programming because of games. I started with a passion for building websites, especially dating sites and social networks. I even built my own CMS so anyone could create their own social or dating site in three minutes. Back then, there were platforms like Joomla, Dolphin, SkaDate, VLD Personals, and others. I loved building these tools, and I had some success. Later, I moved into other areas, including data science.

It’s so easy to lose focus. When you try to do too many things at once, you end up not doing anything well. I’m naturally curious, and while people say that’s a strength, I see it as a weakness. Curiosity is great, but without focus, it becomes a problem. I often have so many ideas that I try to do everything at once, and at the end of the day, I realize I haven’t finished anything concrete.

Being 100% focused, having resilience and discipline to do one thing at a time—that’s a real strength. Tell yourself, “Now is not the time for that other thing. I finish what I started first.” Set a clear goal with a deadline. For every goal, define the outcome you want. For example, if you want to build a mini Star Fox or a mini Call of Duty, what’s your outcome? Maybe it’s to become a better programmer, or to land a job at Nintendo in Tokyo, or at Ubisoft in Montreal.

Most video game studios have been around since the late ‘90s or early 2000s. They don’t release many games—maybe one every three or four years—but that’s enough to keep them going. Giants like Ubisoft have bought so many studios that they have offices all over the world, though now fewer than before.

So, ask yourself: What do you want? What’s your outcome? Maybe you want a job, or to learn a new skill. Decide how many hours a day you’re willing to spend—one hour, two hours? Then set a deadline. For big projects like a video game, a month probably isn’t enough. Maybe your goal is to build a mini SaaS product or something else. The key is to give your time real value.

Time is our most precious resource. Money comes and goes, but time only goes. You can’t get it back. Every two hours, pause and ask yourself: Did I use these last two hours well? If not, how could I have spent them better? Maybe you’ll realize you spent too much time watching videos that didn’t help you, or reading news that only made you feel worse.

Most news is negative, and if you only consume negative information, your view of reality becomes distorted. You start to fear more, do less, and put up your own barriers. That’s why it’s important to surround yourself with positive people—or at least positive voices, through podcasts, audiobooks, or courses. I love my Kindle for this reason; it’s a great way to feed your mind with good things.

Time is the only resource you can never get back. Spend it wisely. — Unknown

If you want to go further, stay focused. Build your own plan for learning and growth. For me, it was a video game. For you, maybe it’s data science or something else. The important thing is to have a plan that fits you, and to stick to it.

Remember, the journey is beautiful. Don’t worry too much about where it leads—enjoy the path. I believe in you, so believe in yourself and go for it.
