How to Start Your Life Projects Before Time Runs Out

Most of us live as if our time is endless. We tell ourselves we’ll get to our dreams and projects later, once we have more time or more money. But the truth is, life is short. We underestimate how quickly the days slip by. We think we have all the time in the world to do what matters, so we push things off, telling ourselves, “Not today. I have bills to pay, chores to do, urgent things to handle.” Yet, most of these “urgent” things aren’t truly important to us.

Days pass, and we keep thinking we never have enough time. But here’s the reality: it’s up to us to make time. Don’t expect to suddenly have more free hours. If you keep waiting for the perfect moment, it will never come. Life only gets busier. Maybe you’ll start a family, have kids, go back to school, or take on a full-time job. New responsibilities will always appear, and time will never magically clear up for you.

It’s the same with money. We often think, “I can’t invest in myself yet. I need to wait until I have more money.” But as months and years go by, new expenses always show up. Even if your salary increases, your spending tends to rise too. This is called lifestyle inflation. You end up always feeling short on cash. The only way out is to decide, “I’m setting aside this amount, even if it means eating rice or pasta with ketchup for a while.” It’s not glamorous, but for a limited time, it works. Or maybe you pick up a small job at a coffee shop on weekends. The money you make can be saved or invested in your future.

The same logic applies to time. If you think you never have time, try waking up just half an hour earlier, or going to your room half an hour before bed. But don’t just lie in bed—use that time for what matters most to you. Even just thirty minutes a day adds up to three and a half hours a week, or about fourteen hours a month. That’s a lot. Even ten minutes a day, every day, adds up to over four hours a month. We all have ten extra minutes. The real challenge is to use them.

There’s a saying I love:

Human beings always exceed the limits of their own imagination.

The only real limits are the ones we set for ourselves. Our beliefs, shaped by our upbringing, religion, environment, and past experiences, can hold us back. But in reality, anything is possible if we push past these mental barriers.

Habits are key. Build habits that match what you truly want. Sometimes, we fall into routines that pull us away from our goals, or we do things that stress us out. For example, I hate waking up late. If I go back to bed after my alarm, I always feel bad afterward. So I made a rule for myself: once I’m out of bed, I never get back in. No exceptions. Because if you allow one exception, there will always be a second, a third, and so on. Zero exceptions is the only way.

Think of it as your own personal constitution. Write down the things you refuse to do, just like a country’s laws. For me, signing a lease for more than a year or a phone contract for three years is out of the question. Who knows where I’ll be in a year? Maybe Argentina, Costa Rica, or New Zealand. If you love staying in one place, that’s fine. The point is to know yourself and set your own rules.

Life is short. That’s why you need to act. Take steps, make choices, and move forward. If you stand still, don’t expect your life to change. New things only come from new actions.

If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.

Thomas Jefferson

Every day, do something—no matter how small—that brings you closer to your goals. Even ten minutes a day can change your life if you stick with it. And remember, the best time to start is always now. There’s no second-best time.

The only limits in life are the ones you make.
