How to Start Your Day Right Without Stress or Gimmicks

Morning routines are more than just a trend. They are the foundation for a day that feels intentional, positive, and full of possibility. Waking up at the same time every day and following a sequence of small rituals can set the tone for everything that follows.
One of my favorite ways to start the day is with positive self-affirmations. If you have a trampoline, jump on it for a few minutes. As you move, say things to yourself like, “Today will be exceptional. I will succeed. Today is going to be amazing.” These are not just empty words. They are mantras, little incantations that help you believe in yourself. Even if the day doesn’t go as planned, saying these things out loud helps you switch your mindset and start believing in your own abilities.
Belief in yourself is the first step. Top athletes know this well. They train their minds as much as their bodies. Even after hours of physical preparation, if they tell themselves, “I won’t make it, it’s not for me,” their chances of success drop. But if they say, “I will succeed. I know it’s my turn. I am the best, even if others have trained harder,” and they visualize themselves crossing the finish line, standing on the podium, surrounded by cheering supporters, their chances of winning increase dramatically.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.

Visualizing your day in the morning works the same way. Picture your day going well. Imagine yourself achieving the three or four things you want to get done. Don’t overload your list. Focus on a few key tasks. This increases the odds that your day will go the way you want.
Here’s a tip: create two lists every morning. The first is your to-do list, with three or four things you want to accomplish. The second is your not-to-do list. This is just as important. Write down things you want to avoid for your well-being. For example, if you’re staying at a hotel that offers cookies at check-in, ask yourself if eating that cookie is really good for you. Maybe you decide, “I won’t eat the hotel cookie today.” Or perhaps you want to avoid talking to people doing street surveys because it wastes your time. Maybe you want to stop arguing with people just to prove you’re right, especially if it drains your energy. Put these things on your not-to-do list.

We often get caught up in wanting to be right, letting our egos take over, and wasting energy on pointless arguments. Is it really worth it? Most of the time, it’s not. By writing these things down, you remind yourself to use your energy for better things.
Once you’ve made your lists, think about your next steps. For me, I like to visualize my perfect day while taking a shower. I ask myself, “What’s next?” Maybe after my shower, I’ll record a short video, read on my Kindle, head to the café downstairs, read some more, reflect, work on my iPad, do a mini training session, and then start my regular job. Yes, I still have a nine-to-five, so I go to the office, come home, pet my cat, relax, have dinner with my girlfriend, and then wind down for the evening. That’s my slowdown moment, where I step back and enjoy the present.
Every morning, I repeat this process. I look at my lists, identify what I want to do, and try to improve each day. At the end of the day, I like to review how things went. What went well? What didn’t? How can I make sure the good things happen again tomorrow, and avoid repeating the mistakes? It’s like updating your software every day, fixing the bugs from the day before.
This daily review is deeply satisfying. It gives me a sense of pride to keep optimizing my days. Each day is a chance to make small improvements, to get a little closer to the life I want.
Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.
— Robert Collier
If you want to improve your days from start to finish, try these simple steps. You don’t need to change everything at once. Start with your morning routine, add your to-do and not-to-do lists, and finish each day with a quick review. Over time, you’ll notice real changes.
