How to Start Over Without Feeling Trapped by Routine

Have you ever felt stuck in your daily routine, like you’re living the same day over and over? Maybe you dream of breaking free, closing the chapter on your current life, and starting something amazing somewhere else. For many, this idea means moving to a different country, changing jobs, or even switching careers entirely. Imagine going from working in a bank to serving drinks in a beach bar, or from being a developer in an office to freelancing from a sunny island. Sometimes the change is huge, sometimes it’s just a new way of doing what you already love, but in a place that feels right for you.

The heart of an “escape life” is about wiping the slate clean. It’s about resetting your life and building new foundations. There’s a saying that after a devastating fire, the soil becomes more fertile than ever. This is true for life as well. Sometimes, you need to clear everything out to make room for real growth. If you only try to tweak your life—drop a bad habit here, add a new hobby there—you might find yourself slipping back into old patterns. The past keeps sneaking into your new life, making it hard to truly start fresh.

Often, people choose to escape to a place that matches their values, culture, or even just has better weather. It could be an island, a new city, or a country you’ve always admired. You might go alone, or with your partner or family. If you have kids, they’ll get to experience a new school and a different way of life. If you don’t like it, you can always return to your old routine. But remember, we only get one life. Why not taste something different? Just like you wouldn’t want to eat the same meal every day, you shouldn’t have to live the same kind of life forever.

Some people work 70 hours a week, always telling themselves they’ll enjoy life once they retire. But by the time they reach 60, they realize they’ve missed out on so much. Trying a new life, even for just six months, can teach you things you never imagined. You’ll discover new cultures, new ways of living, and maybe even a new version of yourself. It opens your eyes and changes you in ways you can’t predict.

But be careful when you return home. It’s easy to fall back into old habits, just like someone who quits smoking but starts again as soon as life gets stressful. To avoid this, check in with yourself at the end of each day or week. Write down what you liked, what you didn’t, and what you want to change. You could even record a short video diary just for yourself. This helps you stay aware of your choices and keeps you from drifting back into your old life without noticing.

I do this myself, and it helps a lot. I encourage you to try it too. Sometimes, just talking to someone about your dreams makes them feel more real. If you ever decide to take the leap, even for just six months, I’d love to hear about it. You can always email me at hihi@ph7.me. I’m genuinely curious about your story.
