How to Stand Out Without Losing Yourself

Standing out from the crowd is more than just a buzzword. It’s about showing your true colors, your unique character, and letting people recognize you for who you really are. Whether it’s the way you dress, the way you speak, or the passions you pursue, these are the things that make you, you. People notice when someone is authentic. They’ll say, “That’s a thesis, that’s Pierre Henri, that’s Edward, that’s Charlotte”—because these people have a style and presence that’s unmistakably their own.

This idea of personal branding isn’t just for social media or online businesses. It matters in the workplace, and even in your personal life. When you run a business, or even just manage a team, people aren’t just buying a product or following a brand—they’re connecting with a real person. And in your personal life, you’re not a logo or a marketing story. You’re representing yourself.

It’s tempting to put on a mask, to create a story that isn’t really you, just to fit in or please others. But that’s not the way forward. The real challenge is to be yourself, in the way that feels right for you. Of course, this depends on where you live. In some countries, the pressure to conform is much stronger, and I know it’s not always easy. But if you feel like wearing shorts and sneakers to the office, like I do—even if it’s raining—then go for it. These days, it’s becoming more common, and society is slowly moving in a better direction. Still, there’s a long way to go.

I’m aware that I’ve lived in places where social pressure is lighter. In Australia, the UK, and other English-speaking countries, you can dress how you want, and people accept it. But when I lived and worked in Paris, even for just a few months, I felt the pressure was much heavier and more negative. I know it’s tough, but instead of just putting up with it, why not become an ambassador for change? Show others what the new world can look like—a world that’s freer, kinder, and more respectful, where people can dress and act as they wish, as long as there’s mutual respect.

Why squeeze yourself into a box just because someone else expects it, or because of invisible pressures that we all feel in different ways? The most important thing is to know who you are, to recognize the pressure, but also to know where you want to go and what’s good for you. Find the right environment for yourself, and don’t let fear or habit hold you back.

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.
