How to Spark Creativity Just by Changing Your Surroundings

Have you ever noticed how the space around you can change your mood, your thoughts, even your sense of self? Today, I want to talk about well-being and personal growth, and how much your environment matters. Right now, I’m sitting in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden. This place is over 200 years old, and as soon as you step inside, you feel a wave of peace. There’s a sense of calm and inspiration here. You can write, you can think, or you can simply be in tune with what you want for yourself.

Even though it’s a tourist spot, just steps from the Sydney Opera House, it’s quiet. No one’s shouting, and you can really rest. Sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

Every morning, I walk from my apartment to my office, which is near the famous “toaster” bridge and the Opera House. My walk takes me through the Botanic Garden. In the morning, there’s a bit of mist, and I feel good. These are the places where I get those “aha” moments—new ideas pop up. I might think, “I should try this,” or “I don’t like that part of my life, how could I change it?” These moments help me move forward. They help me grow, little by little, just by being in the right place.

Learning from your environment is important. Ask yourself, “How can I learn differently? Where do I get my best ideas?” The more you find these places that spark something in you, the more you’ll progress. When you get an idea, write it down. Make a “why list”—a list of reasons and questions. This helps you move ahead much faster.

Isaac Newton did something similar. He kept a list of “whys,” and it helped him make progress in his research, including the law of gravity. He’s just one example, but many others have done the same. I encourage you to try it too.

“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.”
— Winston Churchill

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
— Marcel Proust

If you want to go further in your creative journey, or just want to improve your well-being, pay attention to where you spend your time. Change your environment, even a little, and you might find yourself growing in ways you never expected.
