How to Slow Down Without Falling Behind

Rest. It sounds simple, but how often do we really allow ourselves to pause? Today, I found myself in a park, surrounded by people, and it struck me how important it is to rest—even in public spaces. Of course, if you can find a quieter, more private spot, that’s even better. But sometimes, it depends on where you are. For example, in Sydney, public parks can feel almost private. People mind their own business, and there’s a sense of calm. It’s easy to relax, reflect, and just be.

Taking these small moments for yourself, even if it’s just a few minutes, can make a huge difference. It’s not always about deep reflection or life-changing decisions. Sometimes, it’s just about slowing down, letting your mind wander, and noticing where you are. Most of us live with tunnel vision. We’re always focused, always on our phones, always working or thinking about what’s next. We push ourselves to do more, to be more, to challenge ourselves again and again.

But what happens when you finally stop and breathe? When you take a break from thinking, from planning, from doing? You start to notice things. Maybe you realize that what you’ve been doing for years isn’t what you want. Maybe the life you’re living isn’t really yours. It’s better to wake up to this now than in ten or twenty years.

For me, these breaks are like the old cigarette breaks people used to take at work. I step out to the park next to my office building, sit for five or ten minutes, and just rest. I leave my phone behind because it’s too easy to get sucked back into that cycle of distraction. If I bring my phone, I end up checking emails, scrolling, and before I know it, I’m back in that rush, losing control of my own time.

This constant whirlwind is dangerous. You can spend your whole life busy, doing things you don’t even enjoy, and never stop to ask yourself if this is what you really want. That’s why I challenge you today: take a real break. Step outside, leave your phone behind, and just breathe. Give yourself a chance to see your life from a distance. You might be surprised by what you find.
