Have you ever noticed how some people seem to savor every bit of their life, while others just go through the motions? There’s a real difference between doing things well and doing them both well and with genuine pleasure. The real magic happens when you not only achieve your goals, but also enjoy the process.
But what if you realize that you don’t actually like what you’re doing? Maybe you’re good at something, but it doesn’t light you up. Or perhaps you find yourself stuck with tasks that drain your energy. The first step is to identify exactly what you dislike. Ask yourself: Why does this particular thing bother me? Pinpoint the discomfort or unease it brings.
Once you know what’s holding you back, you can try to transform your experience. Sometimes, simply changing your environment can make a huge difference. For example, I’ve noticed that working on my laptop in my bedroom or on my bed just doesn’t work for me. But if I move to a café, a coworking space, or even one of those new productivity pods you see in shopping centers or gardens, everything changes. The atmosphere, the view, maybe even the birds outside, can turn a dull task into something much more enjoyable.
Of course, sometimes the problem isn’t the setting, but a negative memory attached to the task. Your mind links the current activity to past discomfort, and you end up dreading it every time. In these cases, you need to ask yourself how you can shift your perception. How can you remove the negative feelings so you can start to enjoy the task, or at least stop hating it?
This isn’t always easy. It takes some honest reflection and maybe a bit of brainstorming. For me, coming up with ideas while walking doesn’t really work. But if I’m soaking in a hot bath or relaxing in a spa—like the Polynesian Spa in Rotorua, New Zealand, where I lived for a while—creative ideas just flow. Even being in the kitchen can spark inspiration. On the other hand, tasks that require deep focus are harder for me in those settings. You have to figure out what works best for you, depending on the type of task and your own preferences.

If you still can’t stand a particular task, consider delegating it or even dropping it altogether. Ask yourself if you can change jobs, or simply remove that task from your life. Why keep doing something that makes you miserable? Too many people spend their lives doing things they don’t enjoy, just because they feel they have to. That’s the worst trap of all.
True success isn’t about money or status. It’s about how much you enjoy your life. If your measure of success is the joy you feel every day, then you’re already winning. The real key is to be fully present in every moment, to give your all to whatever you’re doing, and to love it intensely.
Imagine sitting on a swing, just enjoying the movement. Some might say it’s a waste of time, but if it brings you joy, then it’s time well spent. People often call someone like that a “bon vivant”—a person who truly lives. If you savor every moment, even the little ones, you’ll be seen as someone who really loves life and doesn’t let a single minute slip away.
Don’t let social pressure dictate your actions. If you’re only doing things because you think you should, you’ll end up living someone else’s life. Live your own way. If you want a different life, you need to change your habits. Don’t expect new results from the same old routine.
Life is fragile and distractions are everywhere. It’s easy to lose your focus, but that’s just part of being human. The beauty of life is that there’s always room to improve, to grow, and to enjoy the things you love even more. That’s what matters most: doing what you love, and loving what you do.
