Savor Life, Don’t Just Endure It

How to SAVOR Life Instead of Just Getting Through It?

Why living in the present and making conscious choices is the real secret to happiness

Happiness is often found in the small pleasures of life. Feeling good and truly enjoying each moment is more important than we tend to realize. Too often, we get stuck thinking about the past, about missed opportunities, or about things we wish we had done differently. “If only I had taken that chance last year,” or “If I had finished that project, I’d be in a different place now.” But the truth is, the best time to take action and take control of your life is today. The past is over. What matters is what you do now.

Today belongs to you. You can start making better decisions and taking the right actions right away. That’s what makes all the difference. If you keep dwelling on what you didn’t do, you’ll only end up frustrated. Instead, today gives you the chance to build the life you want, step by step.

As for the future, nobody knows what it will look like. The best way to shape your future is to act today. Taking charge of your life simply means taking action.

The Trap of Chasing Success Like an Object

Happiness shouldn’t be put aside while you chase after success. It’s easy to let your happiness depend on reaching some goal, like getting the most prestigious degree, landing a dream job, or working for a famous company. These things might impress others, but do they really make you happy? Sometimes, you end up feeling trapped, living a life that doesn’t fully belong to you.

If that works for you, great. But it’s even better to design a life that fits you perfectly. For many, that means becoming an entrepreneur, a freelancer, or working for yourself. When you create something of real value—whether it’s a game studio, a mobile app, a marketing project, or an online course—you feel proud of what you’ve built. Creating low-quality work won’t make you proud in ten years. But if you keep learning and give your best, it makes all the difference.

Living in the Present and Enjoying the Small Things

It’s important to live in the present. The past is locked away, and if you stay stuck there, you’ll never move forward. Today is your chance to act and take control. It’s also the time to enjoy the little things. Don’t fall into the rat race, always chasing after the next thing. Success is good, but don’t treat it like an object you have to grab. Instead, focus on becoming the kind of person who can succeed.

For example, yesterday I was enjoying a good flat white with almond milk. I thought about whether I should treat myself, especially since I’d moved cities and noticed the price differences. Sometimes, when things change, you hesitate before allowing yourself a small pleasure. But you never know what tomorrow will bring. The best way to live is to enjoy life as if today could be your last. Money comes and goes, but time and happiness are limited. Time is the one thing we all have in a fixed amount.

Invest Your Time, Not Just Your Money

Instead of always trying to save a few cents, focus on using your time well. If you’re happy, you’ll bring more positive energy to your work, your projects, and your learning. I’ve often spent money on expensive coworking spaces or gone on solo writing weekends to finish a book or a course. That’s an investment in myself. It costs something, but it’s worth every cent because it helps me finish what matters to me.

The more choices you make in a day, the more tired you get. That’s why I keep things simple: I dress the same way most days, and as a vegetarian, my food choices are easy. Less decision fatigue means more energy for what matters.

The Psychology of Choice and Decision Fatigue

In social psychology, there’s something called the “choice bias.” We tend to pick from the last 25% of options we see, whether it’s in job interviews or daily decisions. The more choices you face, the more tired you get, and your standards drop as your fatigue rises. By the end of the day, you’re likely to make poorer decisions. That’s why it’s smart to limit your choices and keep things simple.

Experiences Matter More Than Possessions

What really brings happiness? Having people you love around you, having freedom, doing meaningful work, and spending money on experiences rather than things. Helping others with your talents, keeping your expectations in check, exercising, eating well, and taking time to reflect—all these matter more than buying gadgets or cluttering your life with stuff.

The Best Time to Act Is Now

Life is short. Don’t wait for the “right” moment—it may never come. The best time to act is today. If the journey is enjoyable, you won’t even worry about the destination. Focus on the present, take action, and build a life you love.
