How to Rediscover Wonder Without Changing Your Routine

Remember the first time you saw the ocean, or maybe the first time you spotted a guinea pig or a hamster? Those moments as a child, when everything felt new and exciting, are precious. As adults, we often forget how to be amazed by the little things around us. But keeping that spark of enthusiasm alive is more important than we think.

Even now, I try to find joy in small things. Recently, I visited a zoo. I’ve seen kangaroos and wallabies many times before, but seeing them again still filled me with wonder. It’s the same with plants. Imagine looking at an apple tree and thinking, “Wow, apples just grow like that, all by themselves!” Picking one and taking a bite can be a small but real pleasure.

There are always reasons to be happy with what you have. Nature is beautiful. Where I live, I have electricity, hot water, and internet. I can talk to my family easily, even if they’re far away. I can run a business from my computer without much trouble. Life can seem simple when you look at it this way, and that’s another reason to feel enthusiastic.

Of course, it’s all about how you see things. We each experience life differently, and it’s our responsibility to see it in a way that brings us joy. It’s up to us to have fun, to tell jokes, and to enjoy even the simple act of eating a slice of cake. Life is short, and it’s truly wonderful. You deserve to enjoy it fully.

If you’re not happy where you are, remember that you can always move or change your situation. Take action. Don’t wait for the “right” moment, because it may never come. There’s a Chinese saying I love:

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
— Chinese proverb

If you had planted a tree 20 years ago, it would be huge and beautiful today. But if you plant one now, in 20 years it will be just as amazing. This is a reminder to take action now, so that in the future, you can look back and be proud of the life you’ve built.

So, enjoy the little wonders. Be amazed by the world around you. I’m about to drive to the beach near Adelaide, South Australia, and I know I’ll be delighted by the fish jumping in the water. Life is full of these small, beautiful moments if you let yourself notice them.

Life is short, and it is up to you to make it sweet.
