Perseverance. It’s a word we hear all the time, but do we really understand how much it can change our lives? Let’s talk about how sticking with something—even when you feel like you’re not good at it—can completely transform your journey.
If you want to succeed or get ahead in a specific area, but you keep telling yourself, “I’m terrible at this,” you’re putting a label on yourself. That label shuts doors before you’ve even tried to open them. It’s a classic case of impostor syndrome. But here’s the truth: if you really want something, and you keep at it, practicing regularly and always looking to improve, you will get better. Every time you try, you get a little closer to excellence.
It’s normal not to be good at something right away. Sure, some people seem to pick things up faster or have a natural talent. But that’s not an excuse to give up or to think you can’t get good at it too. Everyone can excel at something if they put in the time.
Take me, for example. I’m not good at playing guitar. But that’s only because I don’t practice—at all. I don’t have a special connection with the guitar, but if I spent ten, twenty, or thirty minutes a day learning a new song, I’d get better. Maybe I’d learn slower than someone who’s passionate about it, but with daily practice and the desire to improve, I’d get there. The worst thing you can do is tell yourself, “I’m terrible,” and then close the door on yourself. Don’t stick a label on yourself before you’ve even started.
If you want to excel, earn money, succeed, or even become famous, you have to keep at it. If you’re always looking to get better in your chosen field, you’ll eventually succeed. You’ll become the best of the best. But it takes perseverance and sticking with it. Consistency pays off, and little by little, you’ll rise to the top.

I’m completely on your side. I know you can succeed. Just don’t shut yourself down before you’ve even tried. Maybe your learning curve is steeper. Maybe you don’t love the thing you’re trying to learn. But if you have to learn it, go for it. Keep at it. Sometimes, it’s just your perception that needs to change. Maybe you need to try learning in a different way or in a different place.
Sometimes, we dislike something because we were forced to do it as kids. But as adults, without that outside pressure, we might actually enjoy it. Nobody likes being forced to do something, but when the motivation comes from within, it’s a whole different story.
For example, I was forced to learn Dutch in school and hated it. Later, I wanted to work at the beach clubs in Knokke, a beautiful seaside town in Belgium. Suddenly, I was passionate about learning Dutch because I wanted that job. The same thing happened with other languages. When you’re motivated—maybe by love, maybe by curiosity—learning becomes exciting. Sometimes, all it takes is a new perspective to turn something you once rejected into something you love.
Find your reason, stick with it, and never close doors before you’ve even opened them. The only real limits are the ones you set for yourself. Everything is possible if you want it enough. Some people learn faster, others slower, but we can all succeed and excel in our own way. The key is perseverance. Keep going, don’t give up, and remember: a little bit every day is the best way to get there.
“The only limits that exist are the ones you place on yourself.”
— Unknown
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
— Winston Churchill
Don’t wait until tomorrow to do what you want to start today. The best time to take action is now. Every day is a new opportunity. Open a new door today. That’s already something exciting. Luck doesn’t really exist—you have to create your own opportunities.
