How to Put Yourself First Without Feeling Guilty

We all have dreams and projects we want to bring to life. Maybe it’s launching your own start-up, changing your lifestyle, or simply living the life you always imagined. Yet, days, months, and even years slip by, and it feels almost impossible to break out of the daily grind. Why is it so hard to put ourselves first and move forward with our own goals?
Let me share with you three keys that have helped me, and might just help you too.
1. Put Yourself First and Take Action
The first key is determination. You have to put your own projects and priorities first. Too often, we get caught up in urgent tasks, routines, and responsibilities—work, family, kids, or even just the comfort of our habits. This comfort zone can become a trap. It’s not painful enough to force a change, but it’s not the life you truly want either.
The days pass, and you know deep down that something is missing. Maybe you dream of moving to another country, traveling the world, or simply living differently. But change is hard, especially when life is comfortable. The trick is to make your own projects your top priority, every single day. Even small steps matter. If you do a little bit each day, you create a snowball effect. This is what Darren Hardy calls the “Compound Effect” in his book. Small, daily actions add up and open new doors for you. Over time, it becomes easier and more natural to keep moving forward.
“Small, smart choices, completed consistently over time, will create radical differences.”
— Darren Hardy
2. Visualize Your Dream Life

The second key is to see your project clearly. Visualize your dream lifestyle in detail. When you have a clear picture in your mind, it becomes easier to believe in it and work towards it. I recommend making this vision part of your daily life. For example, set a photo of your dream destination as your phone wallpaper, or print out images that inspire you.
I remember when I wanted to spend time volunteering in Iceland. I put photos of Iceland’s landscapes and famous buildings everywhere—on my computer, my phone, even on my walls. Seeing these images every day kept my goal alive and pushed me to take real steps: booking flights, finding places to stay, and eventually making the trip happen.
This constant visualization works like the law of attraction. The more you surround yourself with reminders of your goal, the more your mind will spot opportunities to make it real. You’ll notice the right announcements, meet the right people, and find the clues you need. When you’re obsessed with a goal, you always find a way.
“What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.”
— Buddha
3. Work in 90-Day Sprints
The third key is to break your journey into three-month sessions. Ask yourself: What can I do every day for the next 90 days to get closer to my goal? Set a clear deadline and a daily action plan. Each day, finish at least one thing that moves you forward. Ninety days is enough time to make real progress, but short enough to keep you focused.
You don’t have to do the same task every day, but you do need to keep moving. At the end of three months, you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come. This method helps you avoid procrastination and keeps your momentum strong.
The Power of Rest
One last thing: don’t underestimate the importance of sleep. I’m writing this after a rough night, and I can feel how much it affects my energy and focus. A good night’s sleep is a real investment in your projects and your life. Take care of yourself, so you can take care of your dreams.
