How to Move Forward Fast WITHOUT Stress or Overwhelm

The best way to make progress and take action is to have a plan—a clear, defined plan for what you want to do and how you want to grow in your life. If you want to move quickly toward the success you dream of, you need to know exactly what that success looks like for you. Visualize it. Picture where you want to be in three weeks, in two months, and focus only on that. Don’t let yourself get distracted by anything else.

It’s easy to get sidetracked, especially if you have a day job. After work, you might go home and do a bit of this and that. Maybe you watch videos online or read a little. These things can be good, but if you have too many projects at once, you end up spreading yourself thin. I made this mistake myself when I was freelancing back in 2014 and 2015 in Manchester. I was juggling all sorts of activities: selling a professional CMS, offering services, maintaining several websites. In the end, I was everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

Because I was doing so many things, nothing I did stood out. My work was average. I couldn’t set myself apart from the crowd. I wasn’t the purple cow in the herd—I was just another cow. Instead of excelling at one thing, I was just okay at many things.

If you try to do everything, you’ll quickly burn out. There will be too much on your plate, and you won’t make fast progress. The risk of burnout goes up. But if you focus on just one thing—one single thing—and nothing else, and you stay persistent and stubborn about it, you’ll get what you want. If you’re 100% persistent and you truly believe it will happen, you’ll always find ways to make it work.

I love this saying: Everything is possible if you really want it. If you want something with real passion, you’ll enjoy the process, too.

Here’s a tip: If you’re an office worker, after work, go somewhere different to work on your personal project. Change your environment. Go to a café or a park with your laptop. Put on noise-canceling headphones and create your own bubble. For two hours, do nothing but that one thing. Don’t check your phone, don’t look at messages—just focus.

This will double your productivity. We often think we’re productive, but we’re actually doing too many things at once. This adds a heavy mental load. We’re thinking about so many things, and all those decisions tire us out. If you remove decision-making and focus on just one thing, you’ll move much faster. Don’t ask yourself, “Should I do this or that now?” Just do the one thing. No multitasking, no switching between tasks. Put all your energy into that one task and nothing else.

This changed everything for me. I’m sure it will change everything for you, too.

— Bruce Lee

2010 was a boon year for these butterflies in my garden. I had a dozen chrysalis in all manner of morphs at any one time. In this image you can see the new green chrysalis coloration, one that’s about ready to emerge (the clear one), and a butterfly that’s already come out. They will hang for hours and dry their wings and are, in fact, quite fragile. How to Move Forward Fast WITHOUT Stress or Overwhelm - Photo by Suzanne D. Williams on Unsplash
