Have you ever noticed how complicated life feels when your mind is juggling too many thoughts at once? I want to talk about the power of thinking simply—about focusing on things that aren’t complicated. Often, we try to think about too many things at the same time, and that’s not always easy or pleasant. The more you have on your mind, the more scattered you become. You end up going in every direction, and in the end, you accomplish nothing.
But what if you chose just one thing to focus on? What if that one thing became your number one obsession? Suddenly, everything becomes much simpler. You have a clear objective, a single obsession, and nothing else matters. You focus all your energy on it, telling yourself, “This is my goal, this is what counts.” Once you achieve it, you can move on to the next thing.
It’s tempting to think about a thousand things at once. You might be thinking, “I still need to unload the washing machine, do the dishes, walk the dog, maybe prepare something else, make a sandwich…” Meanwhile, the things that really matter to you—your projects—get pushed aside. All those little distractions end up cluttering your mind, making it hard to concentrate.
Meditation can help, but even without it, it’s important to tell yourself, “Enough. Let’s clear out the mental clutter.” It’s not easy, I know. Thoughts keep coming and going. But just telling yourself, “One thing at a time,” can make a difference. Sure, there’s more to do, but you can write those things down on a to-do list. For now, focus on the important thing and nothing else. Give your brain permission to think about only that.

Sometimes, I put on noise-canceling headphones to block out distractions. I focus on the project I want to complete. I go into deep work mode, tackling my task list one item at a time. When I finish, I reward myself—maybe with a coffee, a walk, or finally buying that book I’ve wanted for a while. Then, I move on to the next thing.
This approach is simple, but it works. Focus on one thing, finish it, then move on. That’s how you regain control over the simple things in life.
“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.”
— Winston Churchill
“The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus.”
— Bruce Lee
