There’s a special moment in the morning when you’re about to start your day’s work. Maybe you’ve made yourself a cup of tea, your computer is ready, and you feel set to be productive. But have you ever noticed how the word “work” itself can feel heavy? In Latin, “work” comes from “tripalium,” which literally means torture. It’s the same in Spanish with “trabajo.” Historically, work was something forced on people, often unpleasant, even painful.

But what if we could change how we see work? What if, instead of seeing it as a chore, we could see it as something simple, even passionate? If you look at your tasks as just “work,” you risk making them feel dull and joyless. But if you shift your perception, you can turn even the most ordinary task into something that inspires you.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

— Marcel Proust

When you’re about to start something new, something that’s supposed to make you happy or inspired, it’s important to look forward to it. Imagine the final result. Every small accomplishment is another stone in the building of your life. Each task is a new chance to learn, to do something differently, or to find a better, more fun way to do it.

Even the most boring tasks can be approached in a new way. There’s always a different angle, a better method, or a more enjoyable approach. For example, as I look out my window, I see window cleaners working with their cables. It’s a reminder that there’s always something new happening, something different to notice, even in routine moments.

The key is to have fun with what you do. If you don’t enjoy your work, that’s when it really starts to feel like torture. But if you see each task as a new opportunity, it can give you a fresh perspective and a new sense of purpose. Maybe the task itself doesn’t seem fun at first, but you can always find a way to make it more pleasant or interesting.

Changing your perception is powerful. It’s like in relationships: sometimes, it’s not the other person who has changed, but your view of them. Maybe there was a misunderstanding, or you’re more stressed, and suddenly your feelings shift. Taking a step back can help you see things differently. The same goes for work. Ask yourself if there’s a better way to do something, or a way to make it more enjoyable.

We all have the power to change how we approach our tasks. If you’re not enjoying something at all, try redefining how you see it. Start from scratch, as if it’s a completely new task. This mindset can make even the most familiar job feel fresh and exciting.

One practical tip is to change your environment. Don’t always work in the same place. Moving to a new spot can break the monotony and make things feel lighter. Our brains are great at linking places and smells to memories. If something bad happened in a certain place, going back there can bring up those feelings again. That’s why changing your surroundings can help you reset your mindset.

Think about the dentist’s office. The smell and the sound of the drill are instantly recognizable and not very pleasant for most people. But for the dentist, it’s just part of the job. This shows how much our perception shapes our experience.

Redefining your life, your environment, and your routines can make a huge difference. Try using different tools for your tasks. For example, if cleaning with a noisy vacuum annoys you, try using a brush instead. In the kitchen, maybe you can upgrade your utensils or organize things differently to make cooking more enjoyable.

Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.

— Dalai Lama

You can even turn a task you used to dislike into something you look forward to. I used to hate mowing the lawn, but now I listen to podcasts or audiobooks while I do it. Suddenly, it’s my favorite time to catch up on things I love.

The most important thing is to keep an open mind. Try new things, change your environment, and always look for ways to make your work more enjoyable. Every day is a chance to build something new, to learn, and to grow.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

— Aristotle
