How to Make Every Day a Win With One Simple Action

What is the one thing you want to accomplish today? Not a list of endless tasks, but that single, meaningful action that, if done, would make your day feel like a true success. Imagine finishing your day and thinking, “Yes, I did it. Today was fantastic.” That’s the feeling I want you to aim for.

The idea is simple: pick one thing that really matters to you. It could be something personal, like going for a jog, hitting the gym, meditating, reading, or even just enjoying a coffee at your favorite spot. For me, it used to be reading at Café Nero or Starbucks, especially when I was traveling. For you, it might be something else entirely. The important part is that it’s something close to your heart.

Write this one thing down. Use a notebook, a journal, your phone, or an app like Things 3. The earlier you do it, the better. If you wait until later in the day, life will get in the way. Emergencies pop up, family needs your attention, or you simply get tired. If you have kids, a partner, or a busy household, you know how quickly the day can slip away. That’s why I recommend doing your “one thing” in the morning, before anything else. Once it’s done, you’ve already won the day.

Sometimes, your “one thing” might only take ten minutes, like a short meditation. Other times, it could take an hour. The point is to do something for yourself—something that matters. If you get that done, you can feel good about the rest of your day, no matter what else happens.

You can add one or two less important tasks if you want, but keep your main focus on that single, most important action. Write it down the night before or first thing in the morning. I like to start my day with two glasses of water at room temperature (I even wrote about this in my book and on my website). After that, I write down my “one thing” for the day. Once it’s written, you’ve made a commitment to yourself. It’s like signing a contract. There’s no turning back—you’re holding yourself accountable.

Treat this daily habit like brushing your teeth or taking a shower. Make it part of your routine. Every day, do your “one thing.” Over time, it becomes second nature, and you’ll notice a real difference in how you feel about your days.

Don’t put off what matters most. There’s an old Chinese proverb that says the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is now. If you start today, imagine how much you’ll have grown in twenty years.
