How to Make Better Decisions Without Overthinking

Have you ever noticed how much time we waste hesitating over decisions? Whether it’s about your personal life, your job, or even a business opportunity, we often get stuck in endless loops of thinking, weighing pros and cons, and doubting ourselves. But what if the real key to success is simply making decisions faster?

Let’s talk about the connection between the choices you make and the success you achieve. The quicker you get used to making decisions, the more strategic your choices become. Why? Because you learn from your mistakes. Every decision, good or bad, teaches you something. That’s why I recommend keeping a list of your past decisions that didn’t go well. Review this list once a week or once a month. This spaced-out learning helps you avoid repeating the same mistakes and keeps your mind sharp.

But there’s more. When you spend hours—or even days—agonizing over a choice, it clutters your mind. You end up with less mental space for other ideas, projects, or even just enjoying life. The more you hesitate, the more you feel stuck in a fog. This mental fog is sneaky; you might not even notice it, but it blocks you from seeing new opportunities or coming up with fresh ideas.

Here’s the trick: set yourself a time limit for making decisions. Give yourself, say, 10 minutes. Set a timer on your phone. If you haven’t decided by the end of those 10 minutes, go with your default choice. For example, if you’re hesitating between option A and option B, decide in advance which one is your default. If the timer rings and you’re still unsure, pick the default. This method has helped me move forward much faster in life and feel much freer. It clears up mental space and lets you focus on what really matters.

The real challenge is to start now. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Next time you face a decision, try this 10-minute rule. It’s simple, but it works wonders.

“The risk of a wrong decision is preferable to the terror of indecision.”
— Maimonides

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
— Martin Luther King Jr.
