We often make life much harder than it needs to be. When faced with choices, our minds tend to complicate things. We overthink, we hesitate, and the more we analyze, the more our brains invent problems that keep us stuck. Instead of moving forward, we freeze, telling ourselves, “Maybe it’s not the right choice. Maybe I should just stick to my routine.” But if you keep doing what you’ve always done, don’t expect your life to change.

Change only happens when you make a decision, even if it feels risky or uncomfortable. Sticking to the same old habits guarantees the same old results. That’s why making choices is like a breath of fresh air. Sometimes, it’s not about picking the perfect option. It’s about doing something—anything—rather than nothing.

Imagine you’re considering a big move: maybe a new job that excites you, or a master’s degree in a foreign country. Sure, it might be expensive. You might wonder if the diploma is really worth it. But deep down, you want the experience. If you wait too long, life will pile on new responsibilities—maybe a family, maybe kids—and the window will close. Saying “not this year” can easily turn into “not ever.”

We waste so much time hesitating. Every moment spent stuck in indecision is a moment of life lost. Sometimes, you just have to move forward. Ask yourself: Will this bring me something valuable? Maybe it’s a new skill, a higher salary, or simply the joy of learning something you care about. If the answer is yes, go for it. Trust your gut.

The same goes for career moves. Maybe you’ve heard good things about a company, talked to people who work there, and it sounds like a great fit. But you’re comfortable where you are. Comfort is nice, but it can also trap you. Growth comes from stepping into the unknown.

One trick I use is to set a timer for my decisions. Give yourself ten or twenty minutes, or maybe a day or two for bigger choices. When the timer goes off, make your decision. If you haven’t changed your mind by then, stick with your default choice and move on. This way, you keep moving forward instead of getting stuck.

Right now, I’m in Sydney, near the Opera House. I could set a timer on my watch for thirty minutes, and when it’s done, my choice is made. No more second-guessing. This habit helps me keep momentum in life, and it can help you too.
