How to Live Your Priorities Without Waiting for Tomorrow

Every day, I hear people say, “Tomorrow, I’ll start writing my book. Tomorrow, I’ll launch my business. Tomorrow, I’ll join the gym. Tomorrow, I’ll travel the world.” The list goes on—saving for a house, creating a video course, changing jobs. But for most, tomorrow never arrives. There’s always something in the way: not enough money, not enough time, family obligations, or simply the feeling that it’s not the right moment.

The truth is, our days are short. Each day gives us 24 hours, and once they’re gone, they’re gone forever. That’s why it’s so important to start on the projects that matter to you right now.

Recently, a friend told me he’d been wanting to volunteer in Kenya for three years. He dreamed of working with elephants, going on safari, and making a difference. Yet, he still hadn’t done it. Why? Work, daily life, and other things kept getting in the way—like sticks in the spokes of a bicycle, stopping him from moving forward.

Money is another common excuse. Many people talk about their “f*** you money”—that magic amount that would let them finally live their dream life. For some, it’s €5,000 a month. But the problem is, it’s never enough. As income rises, so do expenses. This is called “lifestyle inflation.” The more you earn, the more you spend, and the dream of financial freedom keeps slipping away.

Tim Ferriss popularized the idea of the “mini-retirement” in his book The 4-Hour Workweek: taking six months off every couple of years to travel, learn, or simply live differently. I tried this myself, taking a six-month sabbatical while still technically employed. I traveled, learned new programming skills, and worked on open-source projects. It was an incredible experience that taught me more than any regular work year ever could.

During that time, I lived simply—buying fresh fruit and vegetables, taking the bus to the city, swimming, listening to podcasts, and learning Spanish. Maybe your dream is similar. Maybe you want to travel, start a new hobby, or launch a project. The reality is, there’s never a perfect time. Sometimes you just have to go for it, even if it feels tight financially or logistically. Waiting for the “right moment” is usually just a way to delay forever.

You never know what will happen in a few weeks, months, or years. Life gets busier, not easier. We often think, “After this, I’ll have more time.” But that’s rarely true. Projects always take longer than expected, and even when you work late into the night, there’s always more to do.

It’s important to recognize your limits and understand that time is finite. The key is to prioritize what truly brings you joy. Start with what makes you feel good, what gives you positive energy. Life is beautiful and deserves to be enjoyed fully.

So, how do you decide what matters most? Identify the things that genuinely make you happy. For me, it’s hiking. I love going to New Zealand for long hikes, and I hope to visit New Caledonia soon for more adventures. Whatever your passion—gardening, volunteering, starting a business—make it your top priority.

Once you know your number one priority, it becomes easier to let go of less important projects. You can say, “That’s not my main focus right now, and that’s okay.” For example, if volunteering in Kenya is your top goal, dedicate an hour each day to planning it. Take your vacation time, even if other things seem important. Everything else can wait.

Having a clear system of priorities helps you give your best energy to what matters most. After you complete one big goal, you’ll feel recharged and ready for the next. Maybe you’ll meet someone who changes your perspective, or maybe you’ll simply return home with new ideas and a clearer sense of direction.

Your next priority might be starting a business, moving to a new city, or learning to cook. The important thing is to always know your current number one priority. This way, you avoid procrastination and the trap of endless “tomorrows.” Your top priority comes first, everything else follows.

I also recommend the book The One Thing. It’s a great read if you want to get better at focusing on what truly matters and feeling more fulfilled each day.

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
— James Clear

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”
— Stephen Covey
