Living freely and well is something most people want. For me, it’s always been the goal: to have the freedom to design my days, plan my mornings, afternoons, and evenings, and manage my own time. Sure, it takes more organization, but not having a regular 9-to-5 job is worth it. I remember those days—working from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. as a senior lead engineer. The pay was good, but the hours were so long that, in the end, my salary didn’t feel that great. It’s easy to lose sight of how much time you give away for money.
What really matters is having more time, more money, and a lifestyle that fits who you are. Being free to move, to travel, to live wherever you want—right now, I’m in Bangkok. Before that, I was in Malaysia, then New Zealand, and before that, Australia, where I lived for years. We can all live a life that reflects who we are, a life we love and feel passionate about.
But here’s the big question: How do you live freely and well? The truth is, you need money. Everything costs something. Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it does buy freedom—and it gives you more time. The more money you have, the more you can invest in things like ETFs, stocks, or even businesses. You can also use money to buy back your time by delegating tasks you’re not good at, or by paying professionals to solve annoying problems.
So, how do you make money? By selling what you know—your skills, your know-how. Think about why people call you, why your friends or family ask for your help. Maybe you’re the go-to person for motivation, coaching, tech help, reading, or analyzing tricky problems. For example, my partner is great at understanding complex texts. When I was doing my Master’s in data science, I’d ask her to help me figure out confusing assignments. She could always see what the professor wanted, even when the instructions were vague. Maybe you have a talent like that.

You can help others, or even create a course about your skill. Test your idea by offering a course on Udemy, YouTube, or another platform. Start small, and step by step, you’ll get going. But here’s the best advice I can give: do one thing at a time. Don’t spread yourself too thin or get distracted by what other people are doing online. Focus on one thing. If it doesn’t work, you can switch, but always do one thing at a time. Focus pays off. Finish what you start. If you never finish, you’ll never know if your idea could have worked.
You can start with marketing—Adsense, Instagram, Google, TikTok, wherever your audience is. Do some research to find out where your people hang out. Selling your passion is the most rewarding thing you can do. And starting an online business is the easiest and cheapest way to begin. A physical business, like a restaurant or real estate, costs much more and is riskier. Online, it’s safer and easier, but there’s more competition. That’s why you need a real advantage—a unique selling point (USP).
Fall in love with the problem you want to solve. The best businesses solve painful, urgent problems for people. Your solution can be coaching, motivation, an app, a SaaS product, or a course. Courses are simple to make—all you need is a phone, tablet, or computer. Speaking might not come naturally to everyone (it didn’t for me, even after 12 years as a software engineer), but maybe it’s your thing. Or maybe your skill is cooking, or something else. Whatever it is, go for it.
Life is short. Life doesn’t wait. It’s like a train that never stops. Jump on and start your adventure. The best time to act is now. Don’t put off what you want to do. Even half an hour a day can make a difference. The most important thing is to start today. I’m with you 100%. Go for it.
