How to Learn More Without Taking Endless Notes

When it comes to note-taking, opinions are split. On one side, there are those who fill notebooks and digital files with endless notes, yet rarely put them into action. On the other, some people barely take any notes at all. Instead, they learn something new, find it interesting, and immediately put it into practice.
Let’s say you come across a topic that grabs your attention. You have two choices: either jot down notes for later, or you can do something more active. For example, you might create a video or audio training session about what you just learned. You could even add a PDF summary with the key points. If you ever need to revisit the topic, you simply go back to the training you made, along with your PDF, and use it as a reference.

This approach means you’re not just taking notes for the sake of it. Instead, you’re building resources that you can reuse, not only for yourself but also for others. Your previous training sessions become your notes. They’re more practical, more alive, and much easier to revisit than a forgotten notebook.
The real question is: are you using note-taking as a way to avoid action, or are you turning what you learn into something useful right away? For me, creating something out of what I learn is far more valuable than just writing it down and moving on.
Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice. — Anton Chekhov
The palest ink is better than the best memory, but action beats both. — Adapted from Chinese proverb
Key Takeaways
- Taking notes can be useful, but acting on what you learn is even better.
- Consider creating something practical (like a video, audio, or PDF) instead of just writing notes.
- Use your own creations as your reference material for the future.
Reflection
Are you taking notes just to feel productive, or are you actually using what you learn? What could you create today from something you just learned?
