How to Learn Faster by Doing Instead of Watching

There’s something powerful about learning something new and putting it into practice right away. When you act on what you learn, it sticks in your mind much more deeply. The information gets reinforced, and you start to see real change. But let’s be honest: most of us don’t take that step. We’d rather watch videos, documentaries, or just dream from the comfort of our couch.

I remember a time when I was hooked on travel documentaries. I wanted to travel the world, to go on big adventures. But instead of booking a ticket, I kept watching shows like “Échappées Belles” and others, just sitting on my sofa. It felt safe, easy, and comfortable. But after a while, I realized that watching others live their dreams wasn’t the same as living my own.

You can watch the most beautiful videos, but if you never take action, you’re not really living those experiences. At the end of your life, you won’t look back and say, “Wow, my life was amazing because I watched so many documentaries.” No, you’ll remember the things you actually did, the risks you took, and the memories you made.

What truly matters are your own experiences. Building your life around real moments and memories is what changes everything. That’s why I encourage you to shift from being a passive observer to an active doer. The next time you learn something new or watch an inspiring documentary, ask yourself: “How can I put this into practice, even in a small way?”

Let’s say you see a documentary about a country that fascinates you. Instead of just dreaming, check if you can take a couple of weeks off work. Maybe you already have some vacation hours saved up. Why not use them to go on that trip? Often, we make excuses—work, family, responsibilities. But if something is truly important to you, you’ll find a way. And if the people around you don’t understand, maybe it’s time to ask yourself if they’re supporting your happiness.

Don’t keep putting your dreams off for “the right moment.” That perfect time never comes. The best time to act is now. There’s a Chinese proverb that says, The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now. If you start today, in twenty years you’ll be glad you did. It’s just like compound interest: the sooner you start, the more it grows.

I’ll be honest with you—I’m tired today. I barely slept last night, and I have a lot on my plate. But I’m still taking action, and I hope you will too. We’re in this together. I believe in you, and I’m cheering you on every step of the way.

You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. — Zig Ziglar
