Stop Stockpiling Knowledge: Learn What You Need, When You Need It

Let’s talk about just-in-time learning. Seriously, why would you ever learn “just in case”? That’s a waste of time and mental energy. Be a minimalist with your learning. Don’t cram your brain with stuff you’ll probably forget before you ever use it. Instead, focus on learning exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.

Here’s what I mean. Say you need to create a data visualization with Tableau or PowerBI. Don’t go out and read a 400-page book on data visualization theory. Don’t binge-watch every tutorial on YouTube. Just gather the specific information you need for your current task. Learn the essentials, apply them, and move on.

When you learn this way, you’re not just saving time—you’re making your learning stick. You’ll actually remember what you learned because you’re using it right away. And you’ll be able to iterate, change, and improve your work as you go. That’s how you get better, faster.

Never fall into the trap of learning “just in case.” That’s how you end up wasting hours (or days) on stuff you’ll never use. The same goes for technical books. Don’t feel like you have to read every chapter. Just use the parts that are relevant to what you’re building right now. Iterate, leverage what you’ve learned, and scale up from there. That’s how you create better projects—and a better life—than you would by hoarding knowledge you’ll never apply.

“Don’t learn just in case. Learn just in time, and you’ll always be ready for what actually matters.”
