How to Improve Your Life Without Giving Up What You Love

Many of us spend a lot of time turning over the same thoughts, replaying past mistakes, and wondering what could have been. We get stuck in these mental loops, thinking, “If only I had done this differently.” But what’s the real point of this? It drains your time, your energy, and your mental space. Instead of making a real change in your life, you end up stuck in the past, missing out on what you could be doing today.

The truth is, the past is locked away. You can’t go back and change it. The only thing you can build is your future, and the best way to do that is by working on your present. Every action you take today, no matter how small, is a step toward the life you want.

For me, this means creating software and working in data science. I didn’t always know about data science, and if I had, maybe I would have chosen a different path. But you can’t go back. The only way forward is to use what you have now and keep moving. Focus on what you can control, not what you can’t.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “This is just how I am, I can’t change.” But that’s not true. You are capable of so much more than you think. Often, it’s our routines and bad habits that hold us back. The key is to break free from those habits and start making better choices, right now.

Even small decisions, like what you drink, can have a big impact. If you choose water over soda or alcohol, you’ll feel healthier and more in control. The same goes for the content you consume online. You become what you consume, both physically and mentally. If you fill your life with junk, you’ll start to see yourself that way. But if you make better choices, you’ll start to see yourself differently.

Sometimes, it’s hard to know what the right action is. You might search for a long time before you realize, “If I just do this one thing every day, I’ll get where I want to go.” Being stuck in a fog of bad habits can feel like being trapped in a basement. The longer you stay there, the harder it is to see what’s possible.

We often build invisible barriers in our minds. Think of the story of the elephant in India: when it was young, it was tied to a small stake and couldn’t break free. As it grew, it became strong enough to break the rope, but it never tried, because it believed it couldn’t. We do the same thing to ourselves. Just because something wasn’t possible before doesn’t mean it’s impossible now. Your environment, your upbringing, your past—they don’t have to define your future.

The only real limits are the ones you set for yourself. It’s time to go further and push past those limits. Make sure your actions line up with your long-term goals. If your habits are pulling you away from where you want to be, it’s time to change. Success isn’t something you chase after like an object. It’s about transforming yourself so you’re ready for it.

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is now.

— Chinese proverb

So, don’t put off what you want to do. Don’t make excuses about time or money. Today is the only day you have. If you start now, in twenty years you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come. Even in just one year, you’ll see a real difference.

You become what you repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

— Will Durant
