How to Grow Bigger Ideas Just by Walking and Noticing

Have you ever noticed how much you can learn just by being curious about the world around you? Today, I want to talk about something simple but powerful: using your everyday walks, your daily moments, as sessions to lift yourself up, to become “bigger” in your own way.

When you invest in yourself—whether it’s through reading, watching films or documentaries, or just by looking for new ways to grow—you’re actually making one of the best investments possible. I call this a lever for growth. Everything around you can become a clue, a hint, a spark for your next idea.

Even if something seems completely unrelated to what you’re doing, let your imagination play with it. Ask yourself: “How can I use what’s around me to get a new idea, to have that ‘aha’ moment?” Sometimes, it’s these random connections that help you rise higher and do something greater.

When I’m not sure where I’m going, I look around. I notice the buildings, the way they’re built. I might look them up on Wikipedia or search online to learn more. Then, I see someone who inspires me, someone who gives off positive energy. I think, “Wow, I’d like to be a bit more like that person. What can I do to get closer to that?”

Or maybe I spot a bike I like. I wonder where it comes from. I find out it’s from an online shop, and then I look up the founders. Sometimes, I realize they live nearby. That’s networking, right there—just by being alert and curious about what’s around you.

This habit of always being on the lookout is a very effective way to grow. It’s about making connections between things that don’t seem related at all. In the end, everything can be connected if you let your mind wander and make those links.

“Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.”
—William Arthur Ward

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
—Marcel Proust

So, next time you’re out and about, pay attention. Notice the café behind you, the people you meet, the things that catch your eye. Each one could be the start of something new, something inspiring. The best time to take action is today, right now. There’s no point in putting off what you want to do. Go for it.

2010 was a boon year for these butterflies in my garden. I had a dozen chrysalis in all manner of morphs at any one time. In this image you can see the new green chrysalis coloration, one that’s about ready to emerge (the clear one), and a butterfly that’s already come out. They will hang for hours and dry their wings and are, in fact, quite fragile. How to Grow Bigger Ideas Just by Walking and Noticing - Photo by Suzanne D. Williams on Unsplash
