When we talk about getting rich, most people immediately think of making more money. But let’s look at it differently: what if the best way to become truly wealthy is to invest in yourself first? Investing in your skills, your experiences, your health, and your personal growth can bring you far more in the long run than just chasing after a bigger paycheck.

The Power of Stepping Back

Sometimes, life throws unexpected events our way. These moments can weigh heavily on our minds, making it hard to think big or focus on what really matters—whether that’s your personal life, your business, or your career. That’s why it’s so important to step back and take a break from the daily grind.

One method I find incredibly helpful is taking a personal retreat. Bill Gates made this idea popular with his “Think Week”—he would disappear for a week, completely isolated, with just notebooks and pens. No electronics, no distractions. He used this time to reflect, write, and think deeply about his life and work.

I’ve done this myself many times. I’m a huge fan of what I call “hermit weekends.” You simply isolate yourself for a weekend, away from the city, ideally somewhere in nature. It could be the mountains, a quiet bay, or even just a peaceful spot not far from home. The key is to disconnect and give yourself space to breathe.

Right now, I’m sitting by the beautiful Bay Elisabeth. The weather changes quickly here—one moment it’s sunny and warm, the next it’s windy and cool. I’ve even swum in this bay, though you have to watch out for sharks! But honestly, no matter what’s in the water, the place is stunning and safe. That’s what matters.

The Importance of Doing Nothing

Taking time to do nothing is underrated. Just sit, admire your surroundings, and be present in the moment. These pauses can change everything. They help you clear your mind, recharge, and see things from a new perspective.

If you can, take a few hours or even a whole weekend for yourself. If you live in Europe, it’s easy to hop on a cheap flight and find yourself in a completely different environment. Or, if you can work remotely, leave on a Thursday night, work from an Airbnb on Friday, and then enjoy a mini city trip over the weekend. You can do this twice a month if you want. Yes, it costs money, but time is something you can never get back. Money comes and goes, but life experiences are priceless.

The Right Time Is Always Now

You might think you don’t have enough money or time. But the truth is, you’ll never have enough. There will always be unexpected expenses and more things to do. The best time to take action is now.

Instead of complaining about your life or feeling stuck, remember that you are responsible for your own happiness. You have the answer inside you. Ask yourself: what do I want to do with my life? If you’re not happy, you can always change things. It’s not always easy, and sometimes it means making sacrifices or upsetting others. But you are in control.

Taking action is the most important step. It might be scary, but the best moment to do it is today. Tonight, think about what small changes you can start making in your life. Even a little step can make a big difference.

The best investment you can make is in yourself.

— Warren Buffett

You are responsible for your own happiness. The answer is within you.
