How to Get Rich in a Weekend—Without Chasing Money

When people talk about getting rich, the conversation usually turns to money. But what if the real wealth starts with you? Investing in yourself—your skills, your health, your life experiences—can be the simplest way to gain more in the long run, even if you’re not making a fortune right now.

Let’s talk about how to do that, and why sometimes, stepping back is the best way to move forward.

The Power of Stepping Back

We all have moments when life throws us a curveball—something unexpected that weighs on our mind and blocks us from thinking big. It can keep us from focusing on what really matters, whether that’s your business, your work, or your personal life.

One of the best ways to deal with this is to take a step back. Literally. Take a break, get away from your usual environment, and give yourself space to breathe. There’s even a name for this: “Think Week.” Bill Gates made it famous, but the idea is simple—take a week (or even just a weekend) to isolate yourself, away from distractions, and just think.

Gates used to disappear for a week with nothing but notebooks and pens. No electronics, no phone—just time to reflect and write. He did this in the early days of Microsoft, and it helped him come up with some of his best ideas.

I’ve done this myself, many times. I’m a big fan of what I call “hermit weekends.” You just go somewhere quiet, away from the city, maybe to the mountains or by the sea. Right now, I’m sitting by a bay—Elizabeth Bay, to be exact. The weather changes quickly here, but the place stays beautiful. I’ve even swum in this bay (though you have to watch out for sharks—someone got bitten recently, but thankfully survived). The point is, the place is peaceful, and that’s what matters.

Give Yourself Permission to Do Nothing

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is nothing at all. Take time to admire what’s around you. Be present. These moments of rest, of non-action, can change everything. They give you the space to breathe, to think, and to see your life from a new angle.

If you can, take a weekend for yourself. Go somewhere new, even if it’s just for a few hours. If you live in Europe, you can grab a cheap flight and find yourself in a completely different place by Thursday night or Friday morning. Work remotely if you can, and use the rest of the weekend to explore and recharge.

Yes, it costs money. But time is something you never get back. Money comes and goes, but life experiences are priceless. Even if you feel like you don’t have enough money or time, you never really will. There will always be new expenses, new things to do. The best time to take action is now.

You Are Responsible for Your Own Happiness

It’s easy to complain about life, to say you don’t like it, or to blame others. But the truth is, you have the answer. You are responsible for your own happiness. Sometimes, it means making sacrifices. Sometimes, it’s not easy. But you always have the power to do something different.

If you’re not happy, ask yourself: What can I do right now? The answer is yours to find. It’s not always easy, but everything is possible if you really want it. The hardest part is taking action, but the best time to start is today.

“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”
— Chinese Proverb

“You are the answer. The answer is you.”
