Have you ever looked at someone and thought, “Wow, this person really inspires me. They seem to have it all together. I wish I could live like that”? Maybe you’ve even wanted to start a project, launch a business, or simply change your lifestyle, but you keep telling yourself, “Now isn’t the right time.” Maybe you’ve just moved, changed jobs, or have too many expenses. The truth is, these are just excuses.

If you really want something, you’ll find a way to make it happen. You’ll make sacrifices, say no to some things, and yes to others. It all comes down to priorities. If your number one goal is to buy a house, then don’t be surprised if your dream of starting a business keeps getting pushed to the bottom of your list. But if launching that business is your top priority, everything else should come after.

Stop putting things off. Telling yourself, “I’m too tired today, I’ll do it tomorrow,” is just another way to procrastinate. There will always be something else that gets in the way. The only person responsible for your progress is you. If you want something passionately enough, it will become an obsession. And when something becomes your obsession, you’ll always find creative ways to make it happen, no matter what.

Often, we put limits on ourselves—maybe because of our upbringing, our background, or just because we think it’s not possible. But these are self-imposed limits. You have to break out of that box. If you keep saying, “I can’t do this because of where I live, or because of my situation,” then maybe it’s time to change your environment. If your dream is truly your top priority, you’ll move mountains to make it real.

Sometimes, you see people living the life you want—a cozy coffee shop, a creative business, a different lifestyle. Instead of just dreaming about it, start taking steps. Don’t let your dreams stay dreams. The first step is to stop letting yourself get distracted. Turn off your phone notifications. If your computer is constantly pinging you, either turn off all notifications or use a distraction-free device like an e-ink tablet for writing. If you really want to focus, put your computer away—lock it up if you have to. The point is, don’t let distractions steal your time and energy from what matters most.

Your project, your dream, is more important than any device. Computers are tools, but they can also be temptations. If you find yourself wasting time, put your computer away and get back to what you really want to accomplish.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

— Chinese Proverb

Stop telling yourself, “I can’t do it because of X, Y, or Z.” The perfect moment doesn’t exist. The only way to know if a lifestyle or project is right for you is to try it. Take action now. If your dream becomes your number one obsession, you’ll always find ways—hacks, shortcuts, odd jobs—to get the resources you need. Maybe you don’t have money right now. You can take a side job, work nights, or do what the Airbnb founders did and sell cereal to get started. It might not be your dream job, but it’s a step toward making your real dream possible.

I’m with you all the way. Don’t just admire others—become the person you want to be. Take action, and you’ll always find a way, even if it seems impossible from where you are now.

Don’t let your dreams stay dreams. Start now, and see where it takes you.
