We all have projects, dreams, and things we want to achieve. Some of us are more ambitious than others, but ambition is a deeply personal thing. It’s important not to compare your ambition to someone else’s. Sure, some projects are bigger or take more time, but if you have the energy and vision to pursue them, that’s great.

But here’s the real question: Are you building a life that grows and invests in you, almost on its own? That’s not easy. It takes time, discipline, and consistency. Bit by bit, your life starts to take shape. It’s almost strange to say your life “comes alive,” but it’s true. When you live each day as if your time is limited—because it is—you start to see things differently.

We often act as if life is infinite, as if the blank wall in front of us stretches on forever. But it doesn’t. Our time here is both determined and unknown. If you think you’ll be around for another 80 years, you’re probably wrong. Life is much shorter than we imagine.

Sometimes, we do things that don’t interest us, that don’t make us happy or fulfilled, just because they seem prestigious or because we think we’ve earned them. Maybe you landed a job at a famous company—OpenAI, Google, or a top Silicon Valley firm. Maybe you have a fancy apartment, and everyone around you applauds your success. You worked hard for it, so you tell yourself you should be happy.

But are you, really? Is this what you wanted? Often, it takes a major event—a magical moment, an accident, or something happening to someone close to us—to make us question everything. Suddenly, the house of cards collapses, and you wonder: Is this really what I wanted?

It’s a fair question. Maybe you worked for years, got a PhD, landed a tough job, saved up, even went into debt to get here. But sometimes, a happy life—one that builds itself around your own projects—is much simpler than all that. We look far and wide for something that might be right in front of us.

It’s like those math problems in high school: we always assume the answer must be more complicated than it really is. We’re taught that the things that earn us medals or rewards must be the hardest. But that’s not how life works. More money doesn’t always mean more effort. If it did, coal miners would be the richest people on earth.

The same goes for happiness and fulfillment. The hardest job isn’t always the one that pays the most or brings the most satisfaction. If you want a fulfilling life, you don’t have to do what everyone else thinks is the “right” thing. What others think is just their opinion—they haven’t lived your life.

Often, our parents tell us that if we get a PhD or work for a certain company, we’ll have a wonderful life. But how many parents have actually followed that exact path themselves? In the end, your life is yours alone. Sometimes, you have to make mistakes to learn what’s right for you. It’s personal. Sometimes, it takes an accident or a big mistake to show you the right path.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sometimes, we feel lost, unsure where to go next. Maybe you think, “If I choose a simpler life now, does that mean I wasted 5 or 10 years?” It’s the same in relationships. You might spend years with someone, only to realize you’ve grown apart. It’s tough, but sometimes you have to say goodbye, kindly and respectfully, and move on. The best breakups are like good friends moving to different cities: you keep the good memories and don’t ruin everything with a big fight.

It’s the same with projects and dreams. Sometimes, you realize something you thought would make you happy just doesn’t. That’s okay. Learn from it, move on, and invest in yourself. Keep moving forward and making decisions. The worst thing is to do nothing and let days slip by without choosing a direction.

There’s no perfect moment to act. The mistake is not making a decision at all. When you feel something is right for you, go for it. If you really want something, you’ll find a way—even if it takes longer for you than for someone else. We don’t all start with the same resources, but if you truly want it, you’ll get there.

—George Eliot
