How to Find Real Happiness Without Chasing Success

On this picture, it looks like I have my feet in the void… It’s a very classic photo from Ryten, Norway, for which people even queue up to take it! In reality, there is a rock underneath, making this picture totally safe. But you mustn’t say so… How to Find Real Happiness Without Chasing Success - Photo by Benoît Deschasaux on Unsplash

Many people are obsessed with the idea of success. For some, success means becoming a millionaire or even a billionaire. They chase after the best degrees, then the best jobs, hoping to climb the ladder in a big company or launch the next great startup. The dream is to sell that startup for a huge sum, buy several beautiful houses, and keep chasing more and more. But in this endless race, something important gets lost: enjoying life and feeling well.

Let’s talk about a different kind of success—the kind that’s measured in happiness and daily well-being, not just money or status.

What Does Real Success Look Like?

For me, real success is living a happy life. It’s waking up in the morning without stress. It’s having enough money to feel free, not worrying about missing a meal or being unable to treat yourself to a restaurant now and then. Living comfortably doesn’t mean having a billion dollars sitting in your bank account. It means having enough to enjoy life, to travel if you want, and to know you have a safety net if things go wrong.

You don’t need to own a company that runs itself or have endless wealth. You just need enough to be free from constant worry. If you want to go to Antarctica or Costa Rica, or even New Zealand next week, you can do it. The point is not to have so much money that you don’t know what to do with it, but to have enough to live well and without stress.

How Can You Achieve This Kind of Happiness?

The key is to find something you love that you can turn into a source of income. Maybe it’s teaching, offering services, or coaching. For example, I sell my courses on a platform called Podia. While it’s not always easy to make a lot of money this way, it’s not about chasing the highest number of students or five-star reviews. It’s about enjoying what you do and having the freedom to live life on your terms.

Success, for me, is about well-being, not numbers. You don’t need to run after more and more students or more and more money. Instead, focus on building a life where you feel free and happy.

Consider a Different Lifestyle

Another way to increase your happiness is to live somewhere with a lower cost of living but a good quality of life. For example, some countries in Asia or Latin America, or even parts of Eastern Europe, offer a safe and pleasant lifestyle without being expensive. I personally enjoyed my time in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The people were friendly, and the capitals were great places to work and live.

If you’re a digital nomad, you can even set up your business in Estonia, which offers digital services for entrepreneurs. You get access to government services and banking, all online. It’s a practical way to run your business while living wherever you want.

The Bottom Line

Happiness isn’t about chasing endless success or accumulating more money than you can spend. It’s about building a life where you feel good every day, free from unnecessary stress, and able to enjoy the simple pleasures.
