How to Find Real Happiness Without Chasing Status

On this picture, it looks like I have my feet in the void… It’s a very classic photo from Ryten, Norway, for which people even queue up to take it! In reality, there is a rock underneath, making this picture totally safe. But you mustn’t say so… How to Find Real Happiness Without Chasing Status - Photo by Benoît Deschasaux on Unsplash

When we talk about success, most people picture luxury yachts, endless diplomas, or a collection of shiny achievements. But is that really what success means? I want to share a different perspective—one that focuses on happiness, not just money or status.

Of course, money can give you more freedom. It lets you travel, buy what you want, and maybe even move to Bali or Costa Rica if you feel like it. But happiness goes deeper. It’s about loving your days and enjoying what you do, every single day.

So, how do you reach that kind of happiness? It starts with getting to know yourself. As you learn more about what truly makes you happy, you can start to shape your days around those things. Think of it as a daily experiment: notice what makes you feel good, and do more of it.

For example, look back at yesterday. Did you feel good? What happened that made you feel that way? Maybe you had a great conversation, faced an exciting challenge, or simply enjoyed a healthy meal. The trick is to spot these moments and repeat them as often as possible.

You can do the same with your weeks or even special times in your life. Ask yourself: What was happening? Who were you with? Where were you? Was it the environment, the people, or the type of activity? Once you know, you can try to recreate those conditions.

Let’s say you love swimming in the sea, but now you live far from the coast. Moving closer might be expensive, but maybe you could rent a place by the sea for a week or a month. Try it out and see if it really boosts your happiness. If it does, you’ll know it’s worth making a bigger change.

The point is, happiness isn’t about chasing big, flashy goals. It’s about small, daily choices that add up to a life you love. The more you pay attention to what truly brings you joy, the more you can fill your days with those things.

Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.

— Dalai Lama

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.

— Albert Schweitzer
