How to Find Real Happiness by Achieving Your Goals

What truly makes us happy? For me, it’s not just about feeling good or chasing fleeting pleasures. Real happiness comes from making things happen, from turning ideas into reality. Over the years, I’ve learned that having clear, concrete goals is the key to both happiness and productivity.

The Power of Vision

When I talk about vision, I don’t mean daydreams or fantasies. I’m talking about practical, down-to-earth goals. Maybe you want to start a business, move to a new country, or simply try living somewhere that fascinates you. For example, I’ve always been drawn to Japan. The culture intrigues me, and I’d love to spend a year there. That’s a vision—a clear picture of something I want to achieve.

Having a vision gives you direction. You know where you want to go, but it’s also important to ask yourself when and why. Why Japan? For me, it’s the culture and the sense of adventure. But sometimes, other goals or challenges take priority, and that’s okay. Life is about balancing different dreams and knowing when it’s time to pursue a new one.

When to Pivot

There comes a moment when what used to make you happy no longer does. Maybe you loved waking up early for a jog, but now the cold winter mornings make it less appealing. Or perhaps you once dreamed of opening a bakery, selling cakes and pastries, and now you’re ready for something new. It’s important to recognize these moments and allow yourself to change direction.

Happiness isn’t static. What brings you joy today might not do so tomorrow. When you notice that your daily routine no longer excites you, it’s time to pivot. Try something different. Maybe swap your morning jog for a hot chocolate, or start writing, or take up a new course. The key is to keep challenging yourself.

The Value of Challenge

Challenges are what keep us alive and motivated. People often say work isn’t enjoyable, but in reality, it’s the sense of challenge, recognition, and responsibility that makes us feel fulfilled. If you stop working or pursuing goals, you might start to feel down, as if you’re not achieving anything.

I’ve found that writing helps me channel my thoughts and ideas. Sometimes I write in my living room, other times in a shared space in my building. I even used to write during flights, using that time to set myself small challenges—like finishing a few pages before landing. It’s not about the medium; it’s about having something to strive for.

Anchoring Habits

One trick I’ve learned is to anchor new habits to existing ones. For example, while eating breakfast, I might talk to you, share my thoughts, or write. This way, I make sure I’m productive without needing extra effort. It’s like chatting with a friend about life and what makes us feel better.

Making the Most of Every Day

Not every day goes as planned. Sometimes I wake up late, and it feels like the whole day is wasted. Yesterday, for instance, I stayed up late with my partner, and this morning I couldn’t get up at my usual time. My head felt heavy, and I struggled to get started. But instead of letting that ruin my day, I decided to make the most of the time I had left.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking a late start means the day is lost. But even if things don’t go perfectly, you can still make the most of the present moment. Like when you’re stuck in traffic on the way to a holiday—you might arrive late, but you can still enjoy what’s left. The important thing is to focus on what you can do now, not what you’ve missed.

Keep Moving Forward

The real secret to happiness and success is to keep setting new goals and challenges for yourself. Celebrate your achievements, but don’t be afraid to change course when something no longer brings you joy. Life is about growth, and growth comes from doing, from trying, from sometimes failing and starting again.
