How to Find Instant Joy Without Overthinking It

There are days when happiness feels out of reach. We go through the motions, feeling unfulfilled or frustrated, often because we’re stuck on something or desperate to finish a task. Instead of listening to ourselves and recognizing the need for a break, we push on. But what if the secret to instant happiness is much simpler than we think?
Sometimes, all you need is a change of scenery. Maybe it’s a trip to the mountains, a walk by the sea, or even just a coffee at your favorite spot. You don’t have to travel far or spend a fortune. Even sitting on a terrace, enjoying a coffee, can be enough to reset your mood. After a tough day filled with pressure and endless tasks, taking a moment to relax and savor the present can make all the difference.
Right now, I’m sitting at Dalinsquare in Sydney, enjoying the atmosphere. The trees are lit up, not because it’s Christmas, but because the lights are always there, making the place feel a bit magical—almost like being in a Disney movie. We all need a little magic and a peaceful environment to help us dream and unwind. Without these moments, life can feel like constant pressure, and that’s no way to live.
It’s important to pause and ask yourself: What do I want to do today? What do I want to accomplish? For me, today’s project is building an app that lets you take photos of everything you eat or drink. Whether it’s a coffee, a bowl of cereal, an omelet, or a beer, you snap a photo and store it. Why? Because most of us have no idea what we’ve actually consumed over the past year—or even the past few weeks.
If I told you I ate 10 kilos of fries last year, you might not believe me, but it’s possible. We don’t keep track, so we don’t know. Even in the short term, could you tell me how many coffees you’ve had in the last three weeks? Probably not. But if you took a photo of each one, you’d know exactly. This kind of tracking can help you improve your diet and, by extension, your mood and health.

Our food choices affect more than just our bodies—they influence our concentration, our reactions, and even our tempers. Sometimes, being irritable or moody is linked to what we eat, especially if we’re consuming too much sugar. If I asked you how many chocolate bars you’ve had in the past month, would you know? Probably not. But with photos, you could track it all, securely and privately, over years. This can help you make better choices and even assist your doctor in understanding your habits.
It’s true what they say: too much of anything is bad for you. Eating fries or fast food once in a while won’t hurt, but making it a habit will. That’s why tracking matters. Creating this app is my passion project, and just thinking about it fills me with positive energy.
Taking time for yourself, enjoying small pleasures, and having a project that excites you—these are all ways to boost your happiness. I’m starting this app as an open-source project today, March 20th, 2023. Time flies, and it’s easy to lose track if you’re not living in the present.
Sometimes, you look up and realize it’s already March, or you’ve turned 40, and you wonder where the time went. The answer is simple: you weren’t fully present. Living in the moment means asking yourself, “Am I really here, right now, with my loved ones?” That question alone can help you refocus and appreciate the present.
So, take a moment to reflect. Are you truly present, or just going through the motions? Life moves quickly, and if you’re not careful, it will pass you by.

“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.”
