Have you ever noticed how easy it is to get stuck in a rut? We complain, we grumble, and we start to see everything as ugly or pointless. But often, what we really need is a break—a real escape from our routines and well-worn paths. It’s only when we step away from our habits that we can find serenity and peace of mind. And honestly, isn’t that what we all crave most?

When you’re surrounded by negativity—whether it’s people, the atmosphere, or the endless stream of gloomy news—it’s no wonder your mind gets clouded. You stop seeing the bigger picture. You forget how to look on the bright side. That’s normal. But it’s also a sign that you need to get away, even just for a little while.

For me, it’s like heading to the mountains, a spa, or any place where you can truly escape. These moments of getting away are like a reset button for your mind. They help you recharge, just like deep breathing does.

One simple breathing exercise I love is the “3-3-3 triangle”: inhale for three seconds, hold your breath for three seconds, then exhale through your mouth for three seconds. If you want to go further, try the “4-5-7” method: inhale for four seconds, hold for five, and exhale for seven. Or even the “5-7-8”: inhale for five seconds, hold for seven, and exhale for eight. These techniques are simple, but they work wonders.

Anthony Robbins talks about these breathing exercises in one of his personal development books. I’m a big fan of audiobooks too. Reading relaxes me, but when I can’t sit down with a book—like when I’m waiting in line or driving—I listen to audiobooks. It’s a great way to make use of those little pockets of time in your day.

We don’t think enough about how we can invest in ourselves. Yet, that’s the biggest potential you have in your life: how you can grow, connect, and open up new opportunities. It’s a bit like giving yourself a chance to be lucky.

So, here’s my wish for you: take a moment to escape, to look at the horizon, and to truly enjoy the present. Don’t put off what you want to do. The best time to start living your life is right now.

— Chinese Proverb

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.”
— Anne Lamott
