How to Find Calm Without Fixing Everyone’s Problems

Living simply and happily often means freeing yourself from mental clutter. We all carry a mental load—stress from work, misunderstandings with others, or even negative comments that have nothing to do with us. Sometimes, you do your best, but it feels like you’re expected to be a superhero, fixing everything for everyone. And when people forget all the good you do and focus only on what went wrong, it can be discouraging. This negativity can weigh you down, leaving you feeling like there’s a dark cloud hanging over your head.

It’s easy to start thinking the world is against you, but that’s rarely true. Often, it’s just a series of negative events or toxic people who speak to you in ways you don’t understand. When this happens, it’s important to take a real break. Go for a walk in nature, spend a weekend away in the mountains, or simply find a quiet spot in the forest. For me, living in Sydney, the Blue Mountains are my escape. When I lived in Adelaide, I would have gone to the desert or a national park. In France, there are so many beautiful places to take a break and clear your mind.

Even a short jog in the countryside or a stroll through the city can help. Petting your cat or dog at home can be surprisingly therapeutic. Science has shown that a cat’s purring has a calming effect, and there are even books on “purr therapy.” It may sound funny, but it really works.

The key is to let go of negative thoughts and not let them take up all your mental space. If you feel trapped by negativity—whether it’s from your job, your partner, or your environment—it might be time to consider a change. Sometimes, that means changing jobs, partners, or even countries. Of course, these are big decisions, but you can start small: spend a week or two in a different environment and see how you feel. Life is short, and it deserves to be enjoyed fully.

If you’re not enjoying your life, what’s the point? Start with something simple: go for a jog, walk in the woods, or just spend time with your pet. Cats, in particular, have a magical way of soothing the mind. Their purring is scientifically proven to calm us down.

Another powerful tool is meditation. Even five to ten minutes a day can make a huge difference. You don’t have to meditate every morning if that doesn’t work for you. Try meditating after going to the bathroom or before your shower. When I lived in Ireland, sharing a room with two others, I would meditate sitting on the closed toilet lid in our en-suite bathroom. It was simple, private, and effective.

There are great apps like Headspace or Petit BamBou (a French app) that offer free sessions to get you started. You can also find plenty of guided meditations on YouTube. Meditation helps you build a mental firewall, protecting you from the constant back-and-forth of negative thoughts.

Don’t underestimate the power of small rituals. A hot drink—tea, herbal tea, or even hot chocolate—can be comforting. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, be careful with coffee, as it can add to your stress. For some, like me and my partner, coffee doesn’t affect our sleep, but everyone is different.

Adding plants to your home can also help. Greenery has a calming effect and brings a bit of nature indoors.

The most important thing is to focus on what matters and not let negativity take over your days. You deserve better. We all have negative people and situations in our lives, but we also have the power to manage our emotions and protect our mental space.

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.
