There are days when you wake up and something feels off. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but there’s a sense of emptiness, a lack of satisfaction. This happened to me recently. I woke up feeling a bit down, not really sure why. After thinking about it, I realized I hadn’t done anything for myself in the past three weeks. Work had taken over, and I hadn’t spent time on personal projects or with people I care about—my family, my mother, my girlfriend.

That’s when it hit me: the feeling of dissatisfaction came from not dedicating time to things that matter to me. I had no personal project to look forward to. I was missing that spark, that drive to get out of bed in the morning. Even though it was a Friday, I just stayed in bed after my alarm rang at 5:30 am. I didn’t get up until 8 am. I found myself asking, “Pierre, why are you doing this?”

It’s important to address this problem right away. Life is too short to let these issues linger. Sure, getting good sleep is important, but waking up and feeling excited about your day is even better. Imagine opening your eyes and thinking, “Yes, I’m going to do something great today!” For me, that could be going to my favorite café in Sydney, maybe Max.Nord at World Square, or even just grabbing a coffee at a place I like. Sometimes it’s Starbucks, even if I’m not a big fan of their style, but it’s more about the ritual and the feeling.

The real question is: what project can I start? Maybe it’s time to reactivate a personal project, something with a deadline. I tell myself, “In three months, I want to have built this.” It could be a side project, an open-source project—I love creating those. Even if I don’t make money from it, it brings me a sense of achievement. Plus, it builds reputation, opens doors to better jobs, and you learn a lot along the way. The knowledge you gain is valuable, and if you enjoy it, that’s what matters most.

Maybe for you, it’s writing a book, taking a course, or developing new skills. Soft skills like communication or negotiation can be just as important as technical skills. Don’t put off what you want to do today. Everything is possible. The only real limit is the one you set in your mind. You just need to want it enough. If you put all your energy and focus into one thing, and you’re determined, it becomes much easier.

Key Takeaways

People think depression is sadness. People think depression is crying. People think depression is dressing in black. But people are wrong. Depression is the constant feeling of being numb. Being numb to emotions. Being numb to life. You wake up in the morning just to go back to bed again. How to Feel Satisfied With Yourself Without Burning Out - Photo by Sydney Latham on Unsplash
