How to Enjoy Using Your Brain Without Feeling Burned Out

A digital artwork depicting the synergy between the human brain and artificial intelligence (AI). Featuring futuristic visuals, the metallic, liquid-like brain exudes sophistication, surrounded by electronic circuit patterns symbolizing connectivity and technological evolution. This piece represents a future where AI and humanity collaborate to create limitless innovation. How to Enjoy Using Your Brain Without Feeling Burned Out - Photo by Ecliptic Graphic on Unsplash

There’s something special about those small pleasures in life—especially the ones that come from using your own mind. Right now, I’m programming, even with the help of artificial intelligence, and I realize how important it is to do things yourself: debugging, thinking logically, taking your time, and solving problems. Our brains are thirsty for this. They crave the challenge of figuring things out.

If you hate what you’re doing, sure, you can hand it over to artificial intelligence. But if you enjoy it, you should use your brain. It’s a bit like cars: when cars were invented, people could have said, “Now that cars exist, there’s no need to walk anymore. Let’s just stop using our legs, maybe even get rid of them.” But that’s not what happened. Even after cars took over, people still walk, hike, and even run marathons. The same goes for bikes, scooters, and all sorts of ways to move around. The car didn’t kill the bike—100 years after the automobile revolution, bikes are still here, and now we even have electric bikes.

This is exactly how I see our relationship with artificial intelligence. Just because AI can do things for us doesn’t mean we should stop using our brains. It’s like sports: if you stop moving completely, your body will become weak, and you’ll run into all sorts of problems. The same thing happens with your mind. If you let AI do everything, even the things you enjoy, you’ll end up with a brain that can’t even figure out what 2 + 2 is. That sounds crazy, but it’s not so far-fetched if you never challenge yourself.

Tonight, I’m enjoying this little pleasure—working through a data science project in Python (the programming language, not the snake!). It might sound like jargon, but for me, it’s fun. I’ve almost finished, and I’m genuinely happy doing it.

I find the car metaphor really powerful. People keep saying AI will replace all our jobs, but it’s just like when cars came along. Did we stop walking? Did bikes disappear? No. The car dominated, but other ways of moving stuck around and even evolved. It’s the same with our brains. We need to keep them active, just like we keep our bodies active. Otherwise, we risk becoming passive, unable to think for ourselves.

The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.
— Plutarch

So, I’ll keep enjoying my evening project, and I hope you find your own small pleasures that make your brain work. Don’t let technology rob you of the joy of thinking, solving, and creating. It’s not torture—it’s a real pleasure, and it’s something you deserve.
