How to Enjoy Life When You Don’t Know What’s Next

We all want to live well. We all want to savor life, to truly taste each moment. But sometimes, we get lost. Sometimes, we don’t really know where we’re headed, or if the things we’re doing are the right ones. When you’re lost, when you’re in a moment of doubt, it’s like standing on a line between total confidence and total uncertainty. Most people live right there, in that space between believing in themselves and doubting everything.

There are times when doubt takes over a little more, and suddenly you find yourself in a kind of gap—a gulf of uncertainty. This doubt starts to color your days. It’s sneaky, because if you let doubt take the lead, every action you take in the future will be filled with hesitation. Instead of moving forward, you end up standing still, wondering, “What’s next?” You hesitate, you stall, and you’re not sure if what you’re doing is right or wrong.

Stagnation is never good. When you’re stuck, you’re not really living. You end up repeating the same things you’ve always done. If you’re not happy with your life, this only makes things worse. You become less present, it’s harder to get started, and reaching the next level feels almost impossible. You’re not fully present, but you’re not completely checked out either. You’re just stuck in the middle, uncertain about your past choices and unsure about your future ones.

When your days are spoiled by doubt, it puts a heavy, useless weight on your shoulders. So, how do you stop doubting? The answer is to look on the bright side, to think big, and to remember that there is always hope. Sure, you might have a lot of worries in your daily life, but worrying solves nothing. Instead, create something. Do something. Connect with the right people. Build something new and put your doubts away for now. Move forward. Run instead of standing still. Don’t tell yourself you’ve already lost the race. Even if you didn’t win last time, keep going. Keep practicing, keep moving, because next time, you might win.

It’s not about being stunned by what just happened. Instead, look for the next opportunity. Ask yourself, “What can I do next? How can I land on my feet?” The past is done. Instead of asking, “Why did I do that?” or “Why did things turn out this way?”—which is just mental rumination that solves nothing—ask, “What can I do next time so this doesn’t happen again?” That’s what matters.

Always look for ways to improve, to put things in place so you don’t repeat the same mistakes. It’s easy to fall into the same traps unless you build safeguards, just like in software testing. If a bug slips through, it’s because that part wasn’t tested. So you add a test, and maybe even test the whole system. Your life is the same. Set up mechanisms to help yourself, and you’ll save time and energy. Always ask, “What can I do better now? How can I improve and become a better person?”

That’s the mindset: keep moving, keep trying, keep learning. The past is over. What matters is what you do next.
