How to Enjoy Life NOW Without Waiting for the Perfect Moment

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to actually feel good in the present moment? We often talk about well-being as if it’s some distant goal, but the real secret is much simpler: being present, right here and now.

Let me share a scene with you. Imagine standing at Darling Harbour in Sydney, surrounded by beauty. Yet, instead of soaking it all in, your mind drifts. Maybe you’re on vacation, and instead of enjoying every second, you start counting down: “Only three days left… In two days, I have to leave.” Suddenly, you’re not really there anymore. You’re already thinking about the end, and you miss out on the joy of the present.

This isn’t just about holidays. It happens at work too. You join a new company, and you tell yourself, “I need to make a good impression during my probation period.” In Australia, that’s six months; in France, it’s three. You hold back, thinking you can’t be yourself yet. Then, when probation ends, you start worrying about your annual salary review. You think, “I can’t relax yet, I need to work extra hours to get that raise.” And after that, there’s always something else to chase, another reason to put off enjoying where you are.

It’s the same story with money. You might think, “I can’t buy a house yet, I don’t have enough saved,” or “I can’t start my dream business, I don’t have enough time or money.” But here’s the truth: time and money never just appear out of nowhere. You have to make space for them yourself. If you don’t, you’ll always feel like you’re missing something.

There’s even a phrase for this: “fuck you money.” It’s the idea that if you save enough, you can finally tell your boss or anyone else, “I’m done, I’m free.” I’ve seen bankers in London save for years, hoping to reach this point. But after ten or fifteen years, they realize it’s never enough. Life keeps moving, families grow, expenses rise. The more you have, the more you spend. It’s a trap.

The same goes for time. If you don’t set boundaries, work will eat up every minute. Try this: set an alarm for when you want to leave work. Even if it’s just 5:25 PM instead of 5:00, stick to it. Those extra minutes add up, and over a week, you’ll see you’ve gained hours for yourself.

The real lesson is this: start living your dreams now. Life is beautiful, but it’s also short—much shorter than we think. Don’t wait for the perfect amount of money or the perfect moment. If you keep saying, “I’ll do it when…” you’ll never truly enjoy what you have.

“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.”
—Thich Nhat Hanh

“You will never find time for anything. If you want time, you must make it.”
—Charles Buxton

You deserve to live fully, right now. Don’t let worries about the future steal today’s happiness. The best time to start is always now.
