How to Design a Life You Love Without Starting Over

Have you ever wondered how to create the life you really want? Not just a life that looks good on paper, but one you genuinely enjoy living. Sometimes, you might feel comfortable in your own skin, but still sense that your daily routine doesn’t match your real desires. The first step to building a life you love is to visualize it. Take a moment to imagine what your ideal day would look like. Often, you’ll realize it’s not so different from your current routine. Maybe you just need to tweak a few things: more responsibility, greater respect, a better salary, or simply a more positive outlook on your everyday life.

For me, this process has been ongoing for nearly a decade. Since 2013 or 2014, I’ve been working on improving my life, and now I feel closer than ever to living the way I want. I’ve always had a clear idea of what I wanted, but I know that’s not the case for everyone. Many people struggle to figure out what they truly want from life. That’s why I want to share a simple exercise that can help.

Write Down Your Perfect Day

Grab a notebook and imagine you have the power to live your perfect day on repeat. What would that day look like? Remember, your perfect day doesn’t have to be filled with wild parties or constant excitement. For some, it might be a quiet evening at home. For others, it could be going out and having fun. The key is to ask yourself: could you really do this every day, forever, without getting bored?

The truth is, we all need challenges. A fulfilling life is full of challenges that keep us motivated. We also crave a sense of authority and recognition. We want our work to be appreciated, and we want to feel proud of what we create. If we spent our whole lives lounging under palm trees, it might sound pleasant at first, but we’d eventually get bored. We need to build, to create, and to feel proud of our achievements.

“The best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”
— Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

The Importance of Challenge and Freedom

There’s a book called Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a Hungarian psychologist. He studied what makes people happy and found that we need both challenge and feedback. We want to push ourselves, create things, and feel free while doing it. Freedom is essential. When we feel restricted, we protest and push back. So, understanding your values—what makes you angry, what you love, and what moments make you feel alive—is crucial.

Track What Makes You Happy

Try tracking your mood throughout the day. Use a mood tracker or just jot down how you feel at different times. Rate your mood from 0 to 10, note if you’re stressed, happy, hungry, or relaxed. Do this for a week and look for patterns. Which moments make you feel your best? Which activities drain you? Once you know, try to fill your days with more of what lifts you up.

At the end of each day, review it in reverse. Think of it like rewinding an old VHS tape. Identify the moments that went well and those that didn’t. If you rate a part of your day below 8 out of 10, ask yourself why. Over time, you’ll spot the “hidden gems” in your routine—the moments that truly make you happy. Aim to repeat these as much as possible.

Set Long-Term and Short-Term Goals

It’s also important to have a long-term goal. Think about where you want to be in three years. Every day, spend 10 or 20 minutes working toward that goal. If you want to become a better speaker, practice speaking daily. At first, you might struggle. I did too. I used to stumble over my words, and it took a lot of time to improve. Even now, I still have some habits I’m working on. But with practice, you’ll get better.

You can also set weekly goals. Try to create something new every week. This will give you a sense of pride and boost your confidence. The more you create, the more you’ll believe in yourself.

— Dalai Lama
